Large Scale Central

Well I didn't see this coming

Yes…it’s good to be back. Bob…all, It’s all table saw work. The wood is poplar except for the molding which is pine. I bought 3/4" stock and some 1/2" stock. The big columns and top/bottom rails are 1" x 3/4" The centerpanels are all 11" long. The center panel is 2"x 1/2" stock with edges made from 1/2" x 3/4"stock. The wood between windows is 1/2" x 3/4" The windows are 4 x 8 grid sections 2 3/4" x 5 1/4" Doors are 5 1/4" sg. It goes together fast once all the parts are cut. everything is nailed with a gun and Titebond III. First thing is to nail/glue the top and bottom rails to the first column Second all the panels are assembled. Then the first panel is nailed into the corner the second to the middle edge and the third to the top corner. Then add the next column and repeat. Drop the windows into the opening next to locate the separator. Every wood to wood joint is glued and assembly is made easy by using a pin nailer to add 1/4" ply tabs to the parts as the are added to the wall…check the picture of the back to see that bit. I’ll add caulk to the seams that need it before painting. BACK

That’s going to be a great looking building Larry. Good to see you back.

I like Bob’s idea of flats. I have a bit of indoor track that could use a more prototypical background than cinder block and paneling.

If you want flats, you need to take a look down in Ric Golding’s basement. He’s done some marvelous work

Good one Bruce…I forgot about that!
It’s all carved foam I believe?

Welcome back Larry,
Beautiful industrial structure you have going there. Can’t wait to see your new railroad come to life.

Some questions and answers have come up on building flats. I don’t wan’t to pirate your thread
so will post in a new one.
Rick.

Trackside wall is done…two more small walls to go. Those will only be about 18" compared to the 60" long side walls. Sunny but only 10deg outside…walkin’ the dawg was fun  Worse is that we’ve had 48"s of snow and more is coming. Yes I know it’s colder in Minnesota and it’s nice in Arizona but neither have an Ocean and I wouldn’t want to be there for summer. I could do San Diego…or Hawaii or even South FLA…but here I be and SWMBO says here I’ll be for a long time :frowning:

Nice work Larry. You’re really moving on it.

Frog Tape

ribbit

Not Frog tape. The windows will go in permanently with caulk, right now it’s not Frog tape or lizard tape either

Still chuggin’ along. All 4 walls done now. Next up is to think more about windows and floors inside the bldg.

Nicccce look ! Now I’m waiting for the finish.

Dang, that thing is huge.
Ya know, if that end door was just a hair bigger you could have loft apartments for chihuahuas.

Larry, are the windows “store bought,” or did you fashion them yourself?

I looked, but didn't find that. Thanks, Jon.

WOW!
Great building…
That’s a monster. Great job!

The painting method has been chosen. Bare wood is primed with an indoor/outdoor Kilz primer. First color coat is Rust-oleum, satin, nutmeg. Top coat is Rust-oleum Desert Bisque (multi-color textured). Window frames are first tacked glued to the oversize plexi then a bead of black silicone is run around the edge of the frame near the plexi…then pressed into the window opening and wah-la  we have a side done

Please ignore the gap at the top of the window… a screw up that won’t be seen when I’m done.

Nice color choices, Larry…
