Large Scale Central

Water Drainage on the Bluestone Southern

When we purchased this property, this was a soybean field… Property jad many high and low points. The railroad would be going over a few waterways from rain/storms. One of the first retaining walls built was the Bluefield Town retaining wall… As we progresses, the next wall built was the Sparta retaining wall… Roughyly, there was 16 feet between these 2 walls… I built a “Y” shaped bridge to traverse the waterway.

The 16 foot separation of the walls was not wide enough to allow the flow of water from severe rainfalls, like 2 inches of rain in a few hours… The dirt was being washed out, and I was afraid the retaining walls would eventually be undermined… Hence, the construction of a sunken waterway under the “Y” bridge to allow the water to flow without creating damage.

Below is a picture of the spillway that was built.

The weekend before the Oct Ops session, we had rain for almost a week… During this week, we had one storm that lasted about 25-30 minutes, and dumped almost an inch of rain. During this rain, Jane went out and took pictures of the waterway in action…

From these pictures, our next course of action was decided.

  1. Make the spillway lip all the same height… When we built this, we built the spillway lip ro rhe surrounding ground levels… However, from the pictures, it shows that this only hinders the water spilling into the spillway…

  2. Build a higher berm along the Sparta retaining wall, to direct the flow of water out and over to the spillway lip…

Below are some pictures of the other waterways that we have created:

Might get some Federal money if you list that in the “Wild and Scenic River” category…

Talk about “water features!”

WOW talk about a water feature is an understatement1

Your waterway reminds me of Niagra Falls. I smell a new industry for your RR. When it rains that is.

Do you know anybody in the Corps of Engineers?

Wow that is so cool. Wish I had something like that. Im still waiting for Andy to take a kayak down that.

I am waiting to see someone send Rooster down that in a rubber raft that has a slow leak in it.

Niagara Falls that is…
swimming pools …and movie stars!
You’re gonna need more chemical cars.

Rumor has it Rooster took a picture of Andy in his speedo while playing in the rapids.

That hurts my feelings Randy!

Now I understand all the dry canals in the other thread. Geez, its amazing that it all doesn’t just wash away. It also puts my water run off “problems” in perspective, in other words, I don’t have water run off problems compared to that.

Fortunately, from one of your photos it appears that the houses, full scale ones, are built on a slightly higher grade. But it also looks like the farm fields are at a higher level than your property. May I ask where the water goes once it has run through your property? Without knowing the full property layout of yours and your neighbors, I cannot give an educated guess as to what should have been done by the builder to prevent this kind of runoff from the farm fields.

I don’t want to alarm you but the runoff is from a farm and there could be issues with just what is running off.

Hokey smoke, Bullwinkle!

I live on a river, and I don’t see that much water!

Uh oh. I hear a banjo.

STEVE, PADDLE FASTER!!!

I was looking for a new home!

PS His name is Aquaman !

And when I looked at pics of the railroad being built, I just though Andy liked high bridges. Damn!!
