Large Scale Central

Wanamaker, PA depot

I wanted a depot that would fit in the space I have available on my indoor narrow gauge ‘putz’ that also fit in the 1860’s era I am modeling. The original structure at Wanamaker’s, PA fits the bill: https://picasaweb.google.com/Bunky39/Wanamakers

Looking good, Dave.
Was the freight area lengthened on the original Depot or was the freight door made smaller?
The building proportions are a little different between the two photos.
Ralph

It appears the freight area was lengthened and the platform was reduced from the earlier structure. The clerestory windows are not in place making the doors look taller. The foundation is too tall comparing the headlight positions on the prototype. The facia board will bring the roof line down to the correct appearance.

The roofers installed the standing seam tin metal roof yesterday. They only have the drip edging to do and to apply the ‘red lead’ paint to finish. The carpenters opened up for larger windows and cut in one new window and the street-side freight door. They still have two more windows on the street-side to cut open. The new windows and all the trim should be arriving in a few days from Fenstermaker’s millwork shop. While the carpenter’s are waiting they have the interior walls to frame up, and the brick mason’s need to veneer the foundation walls so the platform can be finished and the steps installed after the siding is hung.

Today the roofers painted the roof with the ‘red lead’ paint, the carpenters installed the windows in the front, some siding and trimmed the freight door.

The stone masons showed up yesterday. They will be back today to finish up the foundation work. (A wee bit out of sequence I know, but work with me here.) The bricklayers are on strike, so we decided to not have a brick foundation and chimney. The ‘cast iron’ chimney, cap with finial look good. This morning the carpenters got busy building the lattice work to close in the area under the loading platform. They should have that and the steps finished sometime today. Hopefully the painters will begin priming the siding in the next day or two.

Coming along nicely.

Got to agree with Ralph. Nice

Some trim is still missing, the rear freight door, some stone work on the back is missing and the steps to the passenger waiting area need to be installed. I think I got the colors close to the prototype. I need to ‘oxidize’ the paint a bit to get it closer.

David, wonderful work… looks great…

Looks great, Dave.
Another coat of yellow paint might change the shade enough for the desired look.
Ralph

I used Olympic “Spiced Cider” for the brown and “Honey Beige” for the yellow on my stations. They both came in darker and lighter shades. They were half pint “samples” from Lowe’s.

Hello David,
Beautiful depot project. I love buildings based in historical fact.

What can you tell me about your stone work around the foundation? That is the
exact look I want on my Smith Camp buildings fireplace.

Thanks
Rick

The stone is real pebbles laid one…at…a…time in tile mastic. The pebbles came from the arts and crafts dept. or the aquarium area of Wal-mart (I think). About a two pound bag for $3.00 (?).
