You could try a pair of Nitril or Latex gloves inside your work gloves. Should keep the sand away from the skin but will probably make your hands sweat pretty badly.
Least, that has been my expierence.
Rick, that worked perfectly. I used cheap disposable nitrile gloves on the inside, and zero skin issues. Not only no new abrasion, but no more chemical messing with my skin by the portland & etc. Thanks!!

Probably not, because the terrain around the city is kinda tame. If I run into a scene build requiring an outcropping, I’ll most likely cast the “rock” over the mortar, since this is really tough stuff. But thanks for asking brutha!
The slinging went quicker today, and 9 bags did the job.
After a section has had a couple hours to set up some, I go back and smooth it out by hand. For this first layer, that’s not really needed, but it’s fun and makes things look nicer, so what the heck. My wife Linda snuck up on me while I was doing that…
As you can see, this is a very messy process. But if you like playing in the mud, like I do, then maybe you should consider it for yourself, haha!
Now, if you’ve been keeping count, only 25 bags have been used for the 1st layer. If things are similar for the second layer (and no reason why they wouldn’t, except thinner maybe in some more finished detail areas), that’s another 25 bags. Which means I over-estimated by 10 bags.

Started the top coat today, with 9 more bags on. Since I’m adding more detail (roads, outcroppings), and taking more time with the texture, I didn’t get as far area-wise. But I think I’ll getter done this weekend and next.

Sure am! But back is ok, because I’m working with only half bags at a time, and am taking things easy. Fingers are no longer a prob, with the dual gloves. Knees are the current issue, because sand gets thru the denim and starts acting like sandpaper on the knee skin. Today I wrapped my knees up in ace-type bandages & tape, and that solved that. Lotta tape though. I’d like to get a proper knee pad pair – not the hard kind that never stay in place and cripple your walking, but a compliant washable fabric/elastic sort of thing, maybe like these. Or these, which say they’re ok for pole dancing, and you never know.

I’ll probably convert the two near streets to one long diagonal each. Need all this to cure first though, the mortar’s sagging under all that new thickness.

I’ve had bad knees since high school when I was diagnosed with Osgood Schlatter disease while playing football that I still suffer from in my old age as I never “out grew” it.
I have tried every kneeling device that I could find and they have all been better than nothing but never provided genuine comfort when kneeling. I even purchased, and subsequently returned, the ProKnee device.
About 5 years ago I discovered ErgoKneel mats and finally have the relief that I was always searching for. I probably have about 5 of them in various sizes. You might check them out.

Sorry about your knees Mark, but thanks for the ErgoKneel tip. I’ve been using discarded chair pads, but the foam is way too squishy. So thanks for that idea!
