Large Scale Central

Vic's 2014 Building Challenge - Mik's Waffle House

I will attempt to build this (which is N scale) as a Large Scale structure ostensibly for the Harbor Layout, but as I dont quite have a specific place for it I will place it on a standalone base I was going to use for a small Microlayout. The base was built back in Sept, so no rules violations.

Cool, Vic. My Ice House is an enlargement and adaptation of an N scale structure as well.
A word to the wise for what it’s worth: I have a closetful of structures that seemed like a fun build at the time but that I have never been able to fit anywhere, pike after pike after pike… Nowadays I only build structures strictly according to the space I have on the Railroad. But however you proceed, this looks like a challenging little structure, with its 1950’s shapes. Small enough that may easily fit in somewhere one day. I’ll be following your build with a lot of interest. Good Luck!

First pic, cutting the window was a PITA,

:stuck_out_tongue:

but got it done.

More to come

mmmmm, I love waffle house. looks good so far Vic!

Must be a “take-out” waffle house…

Reminds me of the diminutive White Castle, that used to be on the North Side of Pittsburgh

Nice work Vic

Very nice. Good clean work. It will pass the Health Dept. inspection. Grade A+.

moving along…more exterior details, once the exterior is finished theirs still the interior to do, still along way to go…

Sprayed this with grey primer and white paint, started on the interior. It will be a removable cartridge. Already spent $10 on plastic and bottled paint, and $10 on a little something for the interior. I will also need to spend part of that last $10 on some lettering before I’m done.

No pics for a while, gluing all the base parts together and that’s stuffed the workbench for 24 hrs till the adhesive cures.

That door looks like it was MADE for this structure. Perfect!

I like that so far Vic. I can smell the waffles already…

If the waffle house goes bust that building would make a great little barber shop.

I could always build that next door in the future

Some pics of the interior cassette:

Foam board countertops, printed dollhouse flooring and photo kitchen. Stools are wood screws, washers, and styrene tubing, costs: nil.

Alot of work done in a short time!

Exterior painted, you cannot tell from the pics but the white is actually mottled so it looks like the stucco has an uneven surface finish:

Paper creek roofing added, this is color xeroxed on cardstock from the sheets I bought years ago:

Exterior lettering and color xerox signs added, these signs are left overs from building the Pizza, as is the lettering. I was planning to buy fancier lettering at Micheals but it would bump me over the price limit so out came the vinyl letter binder:

Another free printed cardstock item: an AC unit, this was from a site called Jim’s Printable
Miniatures, as was the inside floor:

With the interior cassette in place, it really needs a light source. I found a 10 light battery operated Xmas light set cleaning up the garage, I’m going to see if I can rig it inside with just two lights.

I am a little worried, 9 days in and 23 to go and this has gone a great deal quicker than I ever
anticipated, I think I may have to go ahead and add that Barber Shop idea next door to this under the Coke sign. Only trouble is that I am already close to the budget limit, and I will need some sort of barber chair, everything else I think I can fabricate.

Great job

Went ahead and did the addition and it makes a big difference. As I have blown most of my budget and didn’t have either a barbers pole or enough red vinyl letters to spell ‘barber’ I have made it as a hair salon, which would be at home on a city layout. As it is now alot wider I have subsequently decided to forget the original planned base and I will now make a simpler road/curb base out of foam-core and a little detailed alleyway as part of the challenge. Pic:

Probably not alot more pics for a while (batteries are dead). I have pretty much done the bulk of the work, just the base/street/alley to model next.

2 weeks to go

Nice work Vic.

Very well done.
