"Ventilators" - origin of the term?

Larry Otis said:
Ventilators, foamers, and any other nicknames given to people ARE derogatory. Whether it was started by someone that supposedly in that group or not. It brings me to an issue that I was taught in a class on tolerance. A person in a group might not have a problem being called a derogatroy name by a member of the same group but they will have a problem being called it by someone not from that group and that is what we are having here. It is also not good for any new people coming in to the hobby and who decides to join the website only to see the name calling. I might disagree with some of you but at least I respect what you have to say but when you resort to the name calling it dulls my respect for your opinions. LAO
Larry, do you know what a ventilator does? It spins!

Ever operated an eggbeater - you are allowed in the kitchen, aren’t you? It spins and things start foaming.

See the connection? Uncanny parallels!

HJ,
Yup I’m allowed in the kitchen. I do a mean boiled water and my dry cereal and cold milk is beyond decription. Mycholesterol is OK so I don’t use eggbeaters and I like my eggs over well so the eggbeater isn’t needed!

Steve, your comment that you want people to either like you or hate you is an interesting remark. I have found that the ones who hate you are the ones you should trust as the ones who say they like you to your face are the ones stabbing you in the back.

BTW, The tolerance class was required for one of my jobs.

They kicked me out because I bit the teacher. :D

…I’m not walking around with a sign on my back that suggests that I’m in any way "Politicaly Correct.
I also use some descriptive names for groups, in order to save trying to describe them in detail covered by the names I give them. I don’t usually mean any harm in using these names, as all they are meant for is to describe the group.
A name I use quite a lot, is persons of “Lionel Mentality”

So that no-one takes this the wrong way; I'll say that this group is formed by people who seem to want generally,to collect trains; run trains in circles; run trains with all the bells, whistles, smoke, and general noise they can find; true to prototype operation is of little importance, and they seem to be rather thinned skinned.

I respect, and defend their rights to these wishes, and actions, but also defend my right to call them as a group; people of “Lionel Mentality”, rather than using the long description, with no insult meant.

There are other names I use to describe people, just because it’s easier than a long drawn out story. If we all could find more time to treat some things with a greater sense of humour, rather than allowing ourselves to be thin skinned; we would all live longer and have happier lives.

BTW; I laugh at myself more often than most people, and can take a lot of name calling, without any problem.......water off a duck's back is the description....."Call me anything you care to, but for the love of life; please call me in time for dinner!!! "

Twits is one you failed to mention.
Morons and idiots is another.
Shills and faithful are some more.

Dave;

I quit while I was ahead. Start me up and I may never stop !!! But then, I’ve seen and heard what some people that don’t know me, are calling me; I’m impressed with their descriptive ways of trying to impress their peer groups…!!! I’m also very impressed with their lack of knowledge in the use of their own English language. !!!

I’ve been called many things over the years. Some of them I agree with and even admit to! Ah well. I probably should have let the sleeping dogs lie with this string.

Seems I said that earlier. That's what happens when you drag up an old thread that has been put to sleep.

Sheesh, was that fair? Wasn't she wearing a T-shirt that read "Bite me!"????

Were you in the same class? Ugly broad with greasy, dark hair, no bath in at least a week?

Are you sure you didn't pick up rabies from that bite?

Larry,

I find it interesting that you changed dislike to hate. Why did you do that?

Why do you care what some one else thinks? Is there a test somewhere about who dies with the most friends? I’d rather be know for having principals and standing something, than to have friends and be known for agreeing with anything.

Or following lock-step, blindly, doing what you are told and believing only what you are told to believe.

The fanaticism sometimes borders on historical.

But, just wait until next week.

You want hatred?
Go back and look over these forums.
Look at WHO started the flame wars.
WHO dragged up dead threads to vent their poiunt of view.

The absolutely imbecilic statements some have posted are a wonder to behold.

Why do you think they were quoted?

If you get upset with “ventilators”, gawd help you if we just refer to you as “them”.

Steve,

Maybe he had it translated by Google and by Babel Fish, twice. Both times “dislike” was translated as “hate”, nothing you can do about that one. "Them"s the breaks.
It’s like one of those Cinéma Noir movies, no way to get rid of the undercurrents.

You know my ex father in-law was a fellow who didn’t care if you liked him… his whole mentality was that no matter what … like or dislike his position or comments, get mad, happy, irate, or be in agreement, what he wanted was for you to respected him. And as such he held true to his opinions, thoughts and beliefs without lies or falsehoods, double dealing or multiple positions. A spade was a spade and the best cod liver oil tasted awful…a great guy to talk to but terrible to live with, unbending and unyeilding… that is to say no compromise… his way was the only way… he died alone and money rich, only 2 of his 12 grandchildren (my son included) cared enough to go to the funeral…while I aspire to be straight forward and truthful with all I hope that the same thing doesn’t happen to me…

You guys are very knowledgable, well read, and for the most part seem genuinely concerned for the state of the hobby, but this topic brings little to the table and on and on it goes…is it insecure people driven by visions of ??? or so secure in their vision they stand alone in defining the right way to model the world …

I hope Marklin soon announces a production schedule and items list, though I doubt it will reduce the friction between the primary players here… but it might give the rest of us something to talk about!!!

If I miss the point of most of the commentary I’m sorry, I don’t know the participants personally, and don’t have much long term experience here. Not having the depth of background of many of you may be an excuse, but it is not intuitively obvious to the most casual observer what is driving this discussion other than someone is pissed off … like, love, or hate LGB they only made model and toy trains, and this ain’t life or death. If you think it is I’m sorry it ain’t!!!

If somebody lied/double dealt/cheated/or took advantage of the participants in the forum, shame on them…if they expressed their opinion and acted like a minion of the company that’s their choice as well and well if it was not a proven lie, no foul in my mind ( I might disagree with the position but)… If on the other hand they were agnostic and asked relevant and pertinent questions… bravo that’s their choice as well…

MHO

and I’m tired of the junk so I doubt I’ll read anymore of this or similar threads… I want to learn about the trains and the techniques to make them better than they come out of the factory!! I’m not a finescale guy but I like what they do, I’m not a single vendor guy but sometimes it makes it easier… I’m as crazy or normal as I want to be… I just like trains and garden rails…and wine, and whiskey and bheer… and other fermented grains and fruits… and golf and fishing and hunting and fine food… and … well I’ll stop there…

Mark
