I’m all thumbs up on this one! (Too bad I only have two (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif))

Don’t you just love my humility? Yeah little ol’ me (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif)advising The Cliff!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Oh the audacity!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

For me it’s way easier to make dirt look like dirt, than painting texture.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Ahh, now I know you’re feeling better! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

This weekend has been final finishes, starting yesterday with misc touchup, applying decals (thanks Stan, great job as always!!), and nail holes in the deck. Then I started using the good ol’ vinegar and steel wool staining method (here’s a link explaining that). I used this method a few years ago on my flanger 52 project, and I like it because you can lightly wash it in stages until things look good. And, it penetrates the acrylic color coat wash just fine.

I made two huge mistakes though. From the flanger project I learned that I needed to really dilute (like 1:10 to 1:20), but I forgot, and did 1:2. Also, it doesn’t penetrate decals (duh). Since the stain goes on clear and dampens the wood like water, you can’t see the final effect until it starts to dry. By the time I noticed, I’d done one side, it was truly an Oh Poop moment. As you’d imagine, the areas behind the decal are completely unstained, and the initial dabs (around hardware areas) were way too dark. I know, always do a test piece, yada yada…

So I stopped, then came back to it this morning. Did the rest of the car’s hardware areas with a more somewhat diluted mix of the same stuff. Then I did a 1:15 dilution in larger areas, a couple times, to get things more evened out. Bottom line is that my “light” weathering became officially heavy. Really dark. I think it’s passable now, but I didn’t see anything I can do with the decal backgrounds (other than drastic measures, which ain’t happening at this point). After doing some powder weathering (which DOES happen after the decals) and a little more touchup, I did 3 light coats of Painter’s Touch 2X Clear Matte. Here’s the model,

I may put more props on the deck (ropes, tackle, etc.), and probably do something for underbody lights. Then do the shipping container, the powerpoint, and then it’s all done.

===>Cliffy

[edit] Decided to go quick and simple on the lights, and got this pair of battery-op spots.

I have some model ship rigging rope somewhere, need to look harder. And after scrounging around the shop, I found these other prop candidates.

Fine job, damn fine job, Cliff. Not sure I see any weathering that looks out of place but I can’t see what I can’t see (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). I love the mirror revealing the underside. Thanks for taking us along on this journey.

Looks great Cliff. Like Dan, I can’t see any booboos, fwiw.

Another stunning job Cliffy!

Thanks very much guys! And thanks for not pointing out that I’m managing my photo shots quite carefully. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Whenever I see a project like this I think we need a sticky thread called “The LSC Gallery of Builds” where we can store a picture or two and a link to some of the great builds we see. There’s some serious talent around here.

Another example of fine modeling Cliff. Keep up the great work.

Doc

Cliff, outstanding job, a real work of art, thanks for the share, Bill

John, I agree 100%. Something similar to the Challenge presentation thread, must be a completed build, limit the photos to maybe 2 or 3 and a short description and include a link to the original build thread. We have a lot of great builds that sort of get lost over time unless you dig a little. A single thread showcasing all the builds would act as a quasi table of contents.

Thanks for all the kind compliments guys, I don’t know what to say.

I sure appreciate the camaraderie!

Uhhh, what about … “The next project will be …” (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Oh man, don’t get me started…

Thanks very much, John. I’m honored that you’d think of something like that in connection with this build.

But since you raised the point, guys like Doc Watson are truly masters; I’ve seen his recent post office car up close, and honestly, I have no idea how he does that sort of work… And it would be neat to have a means of quick access to such efforts.

Yeah, I think John’s idea is brilliant. Nothing stopping somebody from making such a topic and we can all add our favorite builds to it (maybe you can’t promote your own build, just somebody else’s). If it turns out to be useful, it can be made sticky.

Just a thought…

What? Aren’t you already planning your next build? If we don’t get you started, then how and when will you get started?

Good point David, haha! My problem is too many fun model projects in my head tend to drive out priority stuff… Like house repairs and layout maintenance, both of which I promised my better half that I’d catch up on first. Yup, I can relate.
