Large Scale Central

USMC version 2 (factory building)

This bldg was built on a platform extension from the RR wall that’s been in place for 20 years… Notice the bulge in the 12 foot long wall… Only 1" out at the center. Not bad for 20 years. 4" x 6" posts every 4 feet. 30" below grade 24" above.

Love it…

are you planning to give the storeys their own floor each?

looks good, what did you do for roof support? thanks

The plan is to have 3 floors…not for detail but for lighting.

The roof supports are L shapped rafters made just like the other horizontal sections at the top of each level… makes it stable to bending. There’s one at each column tieing the sides together.

Wow, that is massive! You could store a lot of rolling stock in there.

Does Home Depot carry that “Azek” stuff? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it.

I haven’t heard anyone call them jimmies before, but sometimes I’ve heard the chocolate sprinkles refered to as “chocolate ants”.

Ray, I think HD just recently started to carry it and in 8 foot lengths. If I go to the local lumber companies here it’s all 16 footers

“jimmies” I think it’s a Boston thing…

Work continues. Too cold to paint for at least a week so on to the silos and shed. Set up two platforms in the mill so I could cut out the round holes for the silos which are glued into the holes. PVC caulk will be added later to finish the gap. The foundation blocks (pads) will be screwed to the decking holding them in place. Still have to add the tops. Then paint then details.

This is the foundation for the unloading shed. Azek for the foundation and corner braces Sintra for the wall and roof.

Looks great Larry. In the sign business, we use the brand names Azek & Sintra and others interchangeably to mean foamed PVC board. I know that from brand to brand the surface differs; some are smooth & shiny, others smooth and flat and still others somewhat stippled. Do you find that the brands perform differently. or do you mix them for the finish you want ?

Hi Larry
looking good. is there any difference between azek and the trim boards you used to make the eng. house from HD?

Jon, I mix and match as needed. I get the Sintra from Scott Suleski (also a sign maker) and Azek at HD. I only mention the brand names as what’s available dimensionally depends on the brand IME. Richard, The engine house was built with Sintra sides and beams by another HD product that they call Trim PLank. The Trim plank 1x2 has rounded edges the Azek is squared off…much better IMHO More progress

The shed is 22"s long the car is only about 12 or 14 inches long

Done but not done too… That is, all the major structure elements are built. Now it’s on to painting, windows, siding, roofing, ladders, doors lighting, paving the parking lots, leveling track etc… Oy!

Suddenly those large trains look small. Great building

Nice build Larry. Looks good there

Started on the detail work. Today I got the railings and bridge on top of the silos done. Also picked a color for the silos…kindofan Apple Green shade. Will build the long ladder and cage tomorrow.

dang, Larry, that looks great…

are you done yet

That looks great! I like the “drive-through” loading structure, and those handrails really turned out nice.
