USA trains drover caboose

I saw this the other day. I didn’t even remember USA produced them back in the day.
I have never seen one on Ebay that I can recall.

Lionel produced one also. It was rather different and had more character…it only had the freight door on one side. It was a bit shorter, and added a look of something you would only find on some short line where the caboose might have been built in the railroad’s own shops. We have four of them, and the crews all seem to enjoy having them “Bringing up the rear” on their trains. Something different from the usual offerings, usually modelled after the Colorado narrow gauge lines.

Well, here it is. the label was removed from the box so I can’t get a model number. There is a door on both sides. It has the USA Trains logo empossed in the bottom like all their other trains. Same size as the USA Rio Grande.

That is a slick caboose. I too didn’t know that USAT made that type at one time. Now I want one :grinning:

I have a Hartland drover’s caboose, I think it started as a Delton, not positive though.

“Hartland” took over the old Kalamazoo line when they closed if I remember correctly.
Both had connections with the original Delton guy…way back when. (I forget his name)
Kalamazoo was the first, or close to it, to design/manufacture LS model railroad equipment in North America, to compete with LGB, who originally, when they started marketing in North America, didn’t have any NA styled equipment.
Anyone else who has more knowledge on this subject, please step in and correct me.

Here is one of my favorite cabooses. There is a sticker inside that reads Kalamazoo.
I painted it for my RR and added the rooftop railings to make it more like a drovers type.

The ones John Bouck posted photos of look to be Kalamazoo.

I have always liked the Delton caboose that Cliff posted. It looks similar to the Kalamazoo but it is more chunky, more robust. I’ll take one in red please. :grin:

What the heck is that, with shrink-wrapped grab rails and doors? Kinda like a car you enter but never exit.

Piko and LGB both offered a Pennsylvania Drover Caboose. The irony here is, Pennsylvania RR never had any Drover cabooses to my knowledge.

Nor did the V&T. Their last caboose (car #24), bought in the V&T’s final years after WWII, had a cupola. But for their main operating history, the V&T used certain passenger cars to serve as “caboose-coaches.” They sometimes had a baggage door and compartment, sometimes a partitioned office, but not cupolas to my knowledge, All of them (even #24) were considered as passenger-hauling “coaches” to some degree, when needed.

This one I cobbled up using a D&S combine and a D&RG Drover.

I have, or had, one of those brown ones somewhere in my stuff. Once I unpack the RR shed for the summer I’ll see if I still have it.

Yep, the #24, bought (too late for much action) from the Nevada Copper Belt, IIRC. That’s the only V&T cupola that I’m aware of.
