UP4014's schedule

What modifications will they have to make to the firebox, I wonder?

I would imagine the EPA wouldn’t approve a coal burner and in the West you’d probably have to carry your own coal!
And has anyone seen the 4014?

According to the UP schedule, 4014 should pull into Cheyenne about 1:00 pm MT tomorrow. AND after 50 plus years away from home!!

It should get quite a greeting!

Naaaaaa theres this place called Wyoming thats full of coal…

According to a fellow connected with converting the Grand Canyon’s loco to oil, the major problem will be designing a double burner to heat that massive fire box.

John

From what I’ve read, when they tried converting one of the Big Boys to oil “back in the day”, the main problem they had with it was that they had more coaling stations than oil and so it couldn’t go many places. Nowadays, the opposite is true – no many places where coal is available (and no real coaling towers); but fuel oil is readily available and can be pumped from a truck.

Got this from a buddy of mine that lives in Vegas:

And, according to what the train crew told him, They will be converting it to burn oil…

Here’s the clip my wife shot on her iPad at Mormon Rocks in Cajon Pass. It finally downloaded with no problems!

And here is the video a good rail fan friend put together of 4014 leaving California from Colton to Las Vegas:

The 844 and 3895 both burn used motor oil, so in a sense they are “green”! When you own a fleet of locomotives holding about 350 gallons of motor oil a piece, don’t suppose they have to worry too much about a pretty good supply! I’ll be in Cheyenne the week after next, hopefully I’ll have a little time so I can do a little snooping!
