Large Scale Central

UP 844 Build

Got started on my 844 build project. Using old Pacific parts. Got some Boxpox wheel castings from Bob Thon, they are about the same size as the Pacific’s, once turned down. Using an old Pacific drive that had good gears and the pins, so easy to get the wheels lined up and will stay in place. The rear driver and 3d driver get power, other two are along for the ride.

Boiler was pieced together and covered with thin layers of plastic, after sanding off the cast in pipes/etc.

Front piece is from Bob Thon as is the large dome.

Wheel castings need the center hole drilled out larger and a groove cut on the back to slip over the axle pins.

Hey Jerry,
Nice start for your project. Why did you decide to use an old pacific drive unit instead of one of the new ones? BTW did all the castings come from Bob Thon? How do you get in touch with him, I’d love to get some of those drivers for a project I’m looking at.

I’ll be watching this build with anticipation.
Chuck

Nice choice Jerry. Should go well with your current stable of homemades

…grinning…

Thanks guys,
Chuck , you can write Bob Thon here: [email protected]
I got the wheel castings and the trailing truck from him, and the 844/Challenger type front, all out of metal.
I used an old drive because it had the pins in the axles, holds the wheels in alignment better. Had a real good drive, so figured why not. I had bought 4 of the new axles, but did not get them in the housing, turns out the wheel castings turn down to about Pacific size.

later, Jerry

Thanks Jerry for the information. Looking forward to watching your progress.

Chuck

I turned the flanges on the wheel castings and slotted the backs to fit over the Pacific axles with the pins. Enlarged the Pacific cab to be the right size for 844, put the doors on the back also. Tracks through a switch fine, so I think that will be okay. Lots left to do.

Trailing truck is from Bob Thon also.

I used old newspaper printing plate metal for the cab overlay. Embossed it with rivet patterns using a pounce wheel.

Hey Jerry, fantastic work!

Cheers!
Matt

EXCELLENT work Jerry. Do tell, how did you perform the wheel turning? If I can pull it off with the equipment I have, I might consider it for a build of my own.

Thanks guys, got a LONG ways to go. Jason, Bob has the castings tread already turned. If you have a small lathe you could turn the flange yourself, pretty easy and I know little about lathes. He may do the flange for you even, he’s a nice guy to deal with. The back of the wheel has a round section you can clamp with the lathe jaws, then turn the flange from the front. I had to do it twice, left the flange too wide on the bottom. I have an Atlas 6", but a smaller lathe would do it, I think.

Worked on the front today, all this thinking is bad for my old brain!

Got some work done on the front. Smokebox front and boiler cladding are next.

Worked on the smokestacks today. Cut a Pacific stack base in half to lengthen it. Used some copper fittings for the stacks and wrapped it with thin metal.

Cool project! Looking great so far.

Dear Jerry,

Fantastic.

Scale 1:29 ?

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Looks good Jerry

I did a test run of the chassis, with rods. Ran fine, still need to run a rod to the front axle. Been working on the smokebox front also. Used the Pacific front, cut out the center and glued in the round piece, which is the end of a plastic banister rail I found at the lumber yard. I turned it a bit on my lathe to round it off some more and make and edge for the Ozark smokebox dogs to grab. Ozark bolts are around the edge.
