UP 844 Build

I got the boiler covered with metal duct tape, embossed some door patterns in. Domes were layered up out of balsa and sanded on a boiler scrap to get the

contour. I added some side pieces to the one in front of the cab. Have since put a 1/32n’d balsa over it. Will finish both with metal duct tape, embossed with the forms that are on the tops of them. That front one may be a challenge!

I got the domes covered with embossed foil. The one in front of the cab has the printer plate metal like on the roof of the cab. I also made up some valve gear to approximate what is on 844. I modified the Pacific gear and added some parts.

Jerry that is really looking good. Nice work on the modified valve gear.

Finally warm enuf to spray paint the loco. Scratch already, I see. Making the ears out of embossed printing plate metal. Trial fit here, will attach with 1/4" angle along the bottom and 4 wires going over to the boiler on top.

…grinning…

Getting closer to getting done. Keep finding details to add.

Very sharp Jerry. You’ve really mastered the materials.

Looking Great There Jerry, looking forward to some vids when done, now that the weather is starting to break…finally

Got it pretty much done, little weathering is all that is left.

Jerry,

You did a wonderful job on this locomotive! What a great build. Thank’s so much for sharing it with us.

Matt

Thanks guys, appreciate your comments. Here’s a shot with the centipede tender I made to go with my CHallenger I made a few years back. Will use it with 844. IF the weather ever improves I’ll get outside with it. Runs fine on rollers inside.

Another great job Jerry.
How would like to build one for me?

Thanks Geoff. Rex Ammerman would probably build you one. He can get the Boxpox wheels from Bob Thon, they are about the same as the Pacific’s, would be a bit more difficult to attach them to the newer Pacific blocks, since they have a tapered shaft, where the old block I used had straight shafts with rods the wheels fit over, that’s why I went with the old block, easier to quarter also.

Hi Jerry,

Your loco looks super, nice job. I tried to post over on the MLS site but the post would not go through.
Really enjoyed following you’r build log, what’s next?

Chuck

Thanks Chuck,
Sorta at an end of train stuff, focusing on my 56 Buick, see ‘other hobbies’ forum.

Sort of want to make an A&W for the layout, to park my cars around, also mulling making a gondola, since I don’t have one(I only have about 25 cars).

Jerry the 844 is the one that UP is going to us for the little rock run and it will be stopping in St. Louis. I’m going to be looking at it in a diff way after seeing this build you did.
