Large Scale Central

UP 2906 Build

Jerry looking good and very inspiring! Was out in the garage this weekend looking for a paint brush in my deceased aunt’s stash of tools and found she had a roll of Nashua duct tape in that cabinet of “stuff” I recieved from her estate. Now what to use it on?

Chas

I got the yellow on 2906 the other day. Taped it off and shot the gray today.

Wow, that’s really going to be a beauty when it’s done!

That is looking great Jerry.

Thanks Shawn. Here it is with the gray on it. A red stripe will go across the fairing and the tender. I plan to use vinyl for that. My wife cut some yellow UP lettering to go over it.

That is beautiful!! Once the red stripe is on, it’s really going to look awesome! Going to look great pulling your passenger cars around the SCRR!

Wow! Thats really impressive!

Nice work Jerry, that tape really shines as a modeling tool for your builds. What is the silver area in front of the smoke stack , looks like some sort of vent ?

Very nice!

Thanks guys. Yeah that is a vent of some sort Dave. Book I have with a few pix/pages on it really does not say what it was actually for. I used some aluminum printer sheet and punched slots in it with a chisel. Got a lot of detail work left to do, but I’m retired. WOrk on it off and on.

Looking good Jerry.

Jerry; The locomotive is really looking good. I believe the forward vent is part of a smoke lifting system. Ram air would enter through the vent, then exit around or just behind the smokestack to give some extra “oomph” to keeping the smoke out of the engineer’s eyes. Most of these systems were only marginally successful, which is why the last steamers on many large railroads (UP, NYC, and the D&H come to mind) sported the “elephant ear” smoke lifters. The Reading Crusader locomotive shown below used a similar smoke lifter system to your project locomotive’s system. The intake vents can be seen on either side of the central stainless steel band.

Yours, David Meashey

That Crusader is one sharp looking streamliner!

IMO the sexiest Streamlined steamer ever…

N&W Class J 4-8-4…I can look out my back door and imagine this gals running right by the house…have actually ridden behind her several times…

Bart;

611 and 1218 reside here in Roanoke, VA, where I live. Although both locomotives are on static display, they do get moved several times each year - to keep their bearings from siezing. We (The Roanoke Chapter, NRHS) still hold out hope to see them in steam again someday, but perhaps not in our own lifetimes. 611 basically needs new flues - not too bad - and probably some other minor work. 1218 needs a lot more work (winning one of those Mega Million lotteries would most likely help).

Alas, the Crusaders are just memories now.

Best,
David Meashey

Yes I know…My brother is a graduate of VT, and have seen the ladies on many occasions…steam never died on the N&W, it was MURDERED …TWICE!!! We now return you to the regularly scheduled Exquisit Jerry Barnes Build…

My wife used to have a sign making business, still has her plotter/cutter. She drew up and cut the vinyl for the side fairings and the tender, plus a bunch of stripes I’ll put between the yellow and gray. I got the drive/rods/valve gear all in synch and it runs good. Pickups were on the front/rear truck, plus the driver’s. THe used tender I bought at the same time had pickups also, so think I’ll try track power. I do have a DPDT switch to run battery instead.

Very Sharp! I have discovered that the local Home Depot sells the Nausha brand tape in several different varieties, purchaseda roll to play with and use on the roof of my triple combine…thinking this might be an impetus for steel boxcars in the future!
