Large Scale Central

UP 2906 Build

UP had a streamlined Pacific they used with the 49er out of Omaha to Cheyenne in the late 30’s. Sort of ugly, but appealed to me for some reason. I picked up a used Pacific at Marty’s and used some plastic plumbing pipe and elbows to get an approximation of it’s shape.

The center axle had Boxpox wheels. I got some castings from Bob Thon and turned down the flanges(he has the tread turned is all). I modified the Pacific gear to look more like what the UP had.

I used brass cotter pins from the hardware store for the handrails stanchions. UP did not use diamondplate, but had metal with holes punched in it to drain off water. I used metal duct tape and ran a pounce wheel over it to simulate that.

The side fairings are just clipped on so I could do the front edges with the half-round Evergreen. I will not glue them on till I get the paint done. The cab/boiler come off in one piece(screwed on) so I can paint it off the chassis also. The tender is next.

Cool!

Looks like something straight out of Jules Verne  I like it!

Great idea for those handrail stanchions! Model sure is looking great, you’ve made a lot of progress since the last time I got to see it.

Cool!

Yep, ugly…But in a cool, gotta have it ugly! Would love to have one of those making the laps on my layout. Nice work.

Dang, thats very cool. Always loved the old streamline steam locos. Ugly in a “Hey, thats cool” kind of way.

Using that metal Duct tape is an art form I’m gonna have to learn…That is truly exquisite…

Thanks guys! Bob be sure to use Nashua brand metal duct tape. It’s twice as thick as the stuff in the big box stores/Walmart. I got mine at True Value. That thinner stuff just tears/rips when you try to emboss on it.

...:).....

I got started on the tender. 2906 used a Vandy tender but I didn’t have one, but did have a USRA. So I cut the top curves off and raised it up with a plank(had to trim it down some after this pix).

The tender is all glued up here. Curves back on top and 1/8" plastic on the sides. 1/16" on the back. Balsa ‘planks’ are on top. The original hatch was cut down. The ladder will fit in the recess at the back corner. Embossed metal duct tape is next for the sides. Getting closer to paint!

Looking good Jerry. BTW does Bob Thon have a website where you can go and see what he has for sale? I’m interested in the Boxpox drivers and the two wheel trailing truck he has. How did you get the drivers to fit on the tapered axles on the Pacifc drive units.

Chuck

Chuck, You have to email Bob. [email protected] He has a spam form you have to fill out but he’ll get back to you. Nice guy to deal with. He’s doing some McKeen cars right now out of metal. Has some bodies for sale, if you are interested. He used to offer Challenger kits so has some stuff left from that also. He’s been mostly into Standard Gauge scale. He had the Pioneer Zephyer done that I run, made in Korea. Has quite a history in model rail roading. I got the foil on the tender sides, just the back to do, then getting close to paint.

Looking good. You are really the master of that foil!

Really moving along Jerry. Another nice loco for your stable

Thanks, but I have torn off some strips I had to re-do, believe me!

WE DO!! :)

How do you go about embossing the tape?

I use a pounce wheel. Micro Mark sells different sizes. I have some that are old leather tools that you used to mark where to punch out for laces. Sewing stores also have some for tracing patterns. I do the rivets from the back side. Panel lines I usually work from the front, but you can press out some from the back also. Stuff is cheap so you can afford to experiment. Just buy the Nashua (made in USA!) brand of tape, it’s thick enough to hold up to the embossing. Peel the backing from the foil, if you peel the foil off the backing you get some ripples. Line it up carefully, once it’s on it sticks good!
