Turning a 10 wheeler into a Mogul

While I’ve enjoyed my Bachmann 10 Wheeler, it is just too small for my 1:20 rolling stock.

Now, seeing as I had already converted another 10 wheeler into a 1:20 10 wheeler, I wanted something different.

So…the ET&WNC had a Mogul for a number of years, and I liked the look.

But, I really didn’t want to try to build it EXACTLY like that. I’d use it for inspiration. I like the simple valve gear and the large window on the cab, so I’ll model that, but I’ll try to use as much of the Annie as possible. First task was to cut off the front and shorten and relocate the pilot truck. That was easy…

I want to use the existing boiler, as is. So, I permanently attached some boiler pieces that help hold the air tanks on and filled the holes.

If you look at the prototype, the boiler sits back a bit - the cab starts at the last wheel. So, I built some supports for the pilot beam as well as the firebox in the rear.

The rear supports were coverered with more styrene sheet and rivets added with paint.

Styrene sheets made new platforms.

But, that cab has to be changed and the smokestack is too short. I built up the cab sides using styrene sheet and strips. Here you can see the left and right sides.

The cab will be the same length as the original Annie cab, but taller and wider, so I’ll be able to easily fit an engineer inside.

Must be nice to have both talent AND time

Looking good Bruce. Can’t wait to see the result.

Looking Good Bruce! Yer builds always impress me…

Between him and Rod…

If we could just have a live video cam over their shoulders as they work…

OMG, you can’t lump me in with Rod! I’m more of a hacker at this stuff. Rod’s work is museum quality!

Stoppit

Nice stuff Bruce

Nice work, and thanks for the instructional post! BTW, I’ve also enjoyed your boxcar articles in the past two issues of GR.

Thanks for the nice comments. Meanwhile, some progress. I’ve widened the cab base - about 9" on a side.

Here’s the front cab taking shape. I didn’t want ot mess with the boiler curve, so I cut out a piece of the front of the cab.

It still has to be sanded even, and I have to make the doors.

The smoke stack looks like it will work. I had a small piece of PVC pipe that was the same diameter as the original smokestack, so I glued it in place. The primer was just to see how my seam looked.

I finished the doors, then painted and glazed them. Primer on the cab front so I can see fit and finish.

Next step is to finish the back wall of the cab, then I’ll add the roof and figure out the best way to mount this.

I have success putting fillets in the corners and then screwing into to them from under the cab floor, but I’m sure you would have thought of that. Coming along nicely.

Rod,
That’s exactly what I had planned. Though I’ll probably skip the hinged doors and sliding windows.
Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot about those.

I make my 4 mm thick fillets out of 2 bits of 2mm stuck together. No probs so far.

Getting closer. I left the cab pretty open in the back.

The roof will be left primer colored. The rest was just to check for fit and finish. I’m not planning on operating doors like Rod. I did put a thick strip of styrene down the side and I’ll use that to bolt it in place.

That’s got a great profile.

OK. Now I’ve simplified the valve gear just a bit.

Electronics are done. Cab needs a bit more paint, and then I THINK I’m ready to start reassembly.

Got the cab painted and windows glazed. This shot shows how it will look with the engineer in place.

And… the paint is looking pretty good.

Now I’ve got to put all the parts back.

Let us know how many you have left over after you've finished.
