Trolley project

When I get a couple other projects wrapped up I’m going to “bash” a trolley.

I got an old Bachmann trolley from Victor Smith that I am going to shorten and install an Aristo motorblock when my dealer gets it in stock.

I have been trying to find a good picture of the lower side of a trolley so I can model a “cover” for the Aristo wheels. I haven’t found one.

Has anyone seen a good picture or drawing?

Probably not quite what you have in mind (And almost sure to give Vic ideas), but these are from my ‘someday’ files… The New York Elevated Dinky…

Izzat where the term “You big dummy” came from? BTW, where do they store the coal and water in these things?

I thought it came from here

As Vic said, ‘Big Dummy’ was the Son in Sanford and Son. See the big ugly box thingy on the pic of the one with a partial cab? That’s the water tank. I think the coal goes in boxes on the floor on either side of the boiler like on a small Porter A couple more nekkid dummy pics ought to help you figure out where everything goes.

Hijack post!

c’mon guys…You know I have 0 talent and >0 time for projects…and I’d bet Vic will remember that some of my very first post (he so kindly responded to) were in regards to those little “Tram” engines…like seeing the 7/8 stuff isn’t hard enough…y’all have to post up those cute little buggers for me to think about-what’s a man to do?

Finished-carry on-sorry, good luck with the Project, I’ll be watching and drooling!

cale

Those little dummy engines sure are cute. The first pic of the el is pretty cool. And what’s the story on those passenger cars? I’ve never seen any like that before, they look like they’re double-deckers or something.

They were called ‘shad-bellies’ … “The first cars on the NY Elevated RR had the floors between the trucks depressed to a few inches above the running rails to overcome passengers’ fear of the cars tipping over.”

http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/beach/chapter10.html The NY Elevated stuff starts about 1/4 of the way down.

BTW Doug, if you decide to do this, give me a holler, I got a bunch of Delton driver centers in a box here… probably enough for about 4 Aristo blocks anyway

Now that I managed to totally derail Doug’s thread, this is what the B’mann sideframes looked like

You haven’t derailed this at all. You’ve been giving me lots of ideas.

You even answered a question about another project. I have an On30 0-2-0 that I want to convert to a Gn15 home-built Porter for the mine. I wondered how they supplied coal/wood for it and your knowledge answered the question.

I think the coal was stored in gunny sacks laying flat on the floor where ever there was room.

I’ll have to decide whether mine will be a coal or wood burner. In the west usually the engines burned wood,

A year has gone by so today seems like a good day to start on this.

Wow, has it been a year already???

Good luck with it.

If it gets done it can visit Pizza Pizza!

We wanna see them cars Doug! Now get busy!!!

Somebody sure liked building custom cars on the line!

Most trolly lines have the controls on the same side that today’s cars are. My line runs counter-clockwise and station placement is such that it’s better if the controls are on the opposite side. Will I be beaten and flogged if I do that?

Yes! In the square at high noon!

Firm believer in your RR your rules though!

Oh, oh, I’d better get ready to wal the plank after I’m flogged!

Aye Matey!

And the floggings will continue until morale improves!

(at least that is how Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean sees it)

Well, we can’t make you walk the trolley pole since it’s going to be a steam dummy. (And here I thought a steam dummy was the poor fireman who couldn’t maintain adequate steam pressure!)

Have fun,
