Travis's Mik's Build Challenge 2014

above photo showing marking and cutting 150 grit sandpaper to be used asa "tar paper roof

sandpaper glue with titebond III and clamped in place…
I want to maybe change the color of the roof …any suggestions and how …thinking of diluting some acrylic paint or somethin. never used this technique before…

Thanks for the idea Boomer , I will give it a try. New to the sandpaper “tar” roof technique. So far I think I will like it. Travis

cut the rafter tails and glued them on …

Next up was applying a coat of steel wool stain too siding…

Next up was fitting the windmill tower to the roof line

Then construct my ladder from two pieces of stripwood and round toothpicks for the rungs…

Finished ladder except for stain…

here is where im at so far …

Have some details to finish ,roof ladder fan for the mill not sure if i like the wooden fan or will try to make one from metal.

That’s all for now…

Wow, this turning out great!

Thanks Ray. It looks really tall in the photo, Not sure how high need to measure it. I was looking at a metal fan I took off a old shopvac motor. It is stamped out and then it looks like they twisted the blades on a angle. If I get a chance I am going to try and make my fan for the tower this way. It would be all one piece, no soldering…

Looking like a well plan coming together, I know that ladder is a real lifting experience, that I would never be up to
Dennis

LOL, Dennis it is not as high as it looks . Then again I wouldn’t want to climb it either…

Pretty ingenious on the ladder…

Toothpicks…whoda thunk it?

Before the steelwool stain applied to the windmill tower

And after…

Here it is on top of the well house …

Really shaping up Travis

Thanks, I have decided to redo the roof. So that will set me back a day or two…So this project may not be completed by the deadline,

I love it. Really coming out nice. I like the way you did the ladder. Great idea.

Very nice project Travis, really well done. I agree with everyone else…I’m standing in line to steal the toothpick ladder idea from you; that’s a stroke of inspiration. In fact, I think I know where I might use it on my build. Really nice work.

Thanks for the kind comments on my ladder… I used two strips of wood 1/4 x 1/8. and clamped them to the edge of my work table, then i marked it out to 1/2 spaces between rungs or what ya want. Then I used a pin vise drill with a 7/64 bit which will keep the round tooth pick snug when pushing into the holes… word of advice and experience cut one end of the sharp tooth pick off !!. They are painful… After you get the ladder all together and straightened out, you then can sand the ends of the rungs on each side and the thickness of the ladder as well being 1/4 inch comes out to 6 inches in 1/24 … Travis

More Progress. Re roofed my shack using masking tape. I really like the way it turned out and will use this more often for roofs. Thanks for those of you that gave me the info on it and help…

After tape was applied and trimmed, I gave it a coat of acrylic black. After the project is complete I will be spraying it with a dull coat clear finish…
