Travis's 2016 Mik's Build Challenge FireHouse

Started the siding tonite…

After it is all hung, It will then be painted. Trim will be added and widows installed… Not sure what color I am gonna go with yet tho…

red walls and white windows and doors. - what else for a fire dept.??

Very nice start to a very nice building. As to paint is this in an established city or is this in a shanty town, or a town that had its heyday but now is struggling to hang on. If it is in a nice Norman Rockwell community I second Korm’s suggestion of crisp clean red walls and white trim. A shanty town would be natural rough sawn wood. In a run down town either aged natural wood or very distressed red walls and white windows.

That’s one fine looking fire house, Travis. I agree with Devon’s suggestions on the paint which means by association, I agree with Korm.

Another consideration, was it a school or a church that the firemen re-purposed? A grungy white could also be a possibility.

John

I am thinking I will go with a off red with white trim.

Or paint it Chartreuse Green, And say they were the first to go to the puke color…

Nah Dave… Fire trucks are suppose to be and will always be red in my world… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I go with red every time for doors and trucks.

There would be few, if any, firehouses in the UK built with wood (other than floors, joists etc.) the structures being brick or concrete. However it is customary to have red doors.

I have seen pics of yellow fire trucks in the USA and I mention an experiment in the late 1960’s in the City of Coventry (central England) to paint trucks yellow. The reasoning being is busy towns and cities to identify a red fire truck from the red buses, post office vehicles and others was becoming more difficult. At the time small rotating beacons (blue) were all you could look for on the fire truck roof. The UK government did not approve the colour, so all still remains red. Aerodromes did have (may still have) some yellow painted vehicles.

Siding all finished. Next will be the trim on the eaves and the soffits.

Last piece of clap board siding.

I turned the bell on the lathe tonite from a 1 1/2 oak dowel. Here it is while turning and finished.

Bell sitting on top of the belfry. It will be hung from the top on the inside. I will probably try to paint it a bronze color or something close to that.

So that was my progress since Saturday nite… Up next doors, finish windows, paint, down spouts, and the bell tower top…

Nice to to a fellow wood turner putting the lathe to use. Great bell. Man I nee to get my ShopSmith fixed.

Tonite I did some painting and final sanding. I have all of the siding painted the bell painted and hung in the tower and windows are done. I don’t have any pics to post as of right now, but that is where I am at with this project. I went with gray for my trim and windows, it really stands out nice against the off red color…

Nice job on the windows, bell tower and siding. What happened to the sign frame above the door that was in earlier photos?

I like the bell!

Todd it will be added on top of the siding. I think I am gonna make it a little bigger. The one in the photos was taped on the back to see how it was gonna look…

Thanks Rooster. I turned it on the lathe out of a oak dowel rod i had laying around.

That’s really looking good Travis. I bet you’re glad to be done with all that siding. Nice thing about a wooden bell is you won’t have scrappers trying to steal it! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing some color in it.

Hmm what happened to all the pics on the post?..

Randy, not everyone has that problem.

Yes I am glad the siding is all done… There were close to 200 pieces for this building. What took most of the time was the angles for the Gable roof ends. So I did get the siding and trim painted Tuesday evening while home from work for daughters birthday. I added cedar to hide the rough edges of the sheeting I used for the roof. So here are some pics with the windows and the bell tower top temporarily installed…

I need to cut some corner trim pieces and the frame work for the doors. Tonite I started on the bell tower roof with the tin roof. I sure do wish that all the tin roof and siding I had ever help hang it cut this easy…lol… I decided to go with E-6000 for the adhesive. So far it seems to be working.I will post some pics of it tomorrow nite.
