So the topic of sharing made me realize I was holding out. Here s a great look at one of the older American locomotives still around and I am almost certain one of the few remaining Grant locos. The best part is it is the Coeur d’Alene Railway and Navigation #1. Though it looks nothing like anymore.
Built in 1881 by Grant locomotive works for Texas & St. Louis Railroad as the #18 “John Parham” It went to CR&N in 1886 as their #1. It was sold in 1898 to the Mason & Oceana as their second #1 “Robert H. Butters”. We believe from their it went to Sterns and Culver as their #1 which was a narrow gauge logging railroad. Henry Ford bought the logging company. Sometime around 1923 Ford converted it to standard gauge and used it at the auto-plant as the #5. At some point it was retired and moved to the Ford Museum. Its history is a little shaky here. It was sold to a private collector in 1985. Then the San Filippo Museum in Barrington IL. acquired it and is in possession of it now. I would not stake my life on this chain of custody but It is pretty solid from several sources. This is my story and I am sticking to it.
So as a promotional gig for these two young ladies music video they used this loco. So here is one of my pride and joys for you to enjoy. But first a couple of photos back in the day.
This is how they washed the locos on the CR&N
Now for your listening pleasure.
