Large Scale Central

trains, Girls, and Ozzy Osborne

So the topic of sharing made me realize I was holding out. Here s a great look at one of the older American locomotives still around and I am almost certain one of the few remaining Grant locos. The best part is it is the Coeur d’Alene Railway and Navigation #1. Though it looks nothing like anymore.

Built in 1881 by Grant locomotive works for Texas & St. Louis Railroad as the #18 “John Parham” It went to CR&N in 1886 as their #1. It was sold in 1898 to the Mason & Oceana as their second #1 “Robert H. Butters”. We believe from their it went to Sterns and Culver as their #1 which was a narrow gauge logging railroad. Henry Ford bought the logging company. Sometime around 1923 Ford converted it to standard gauge and used it at the auto-plant as the #5. At some point it was retired and moved to the Ford Museum. Its history is a little shaky here. It was sold to a private collector in 1985. Then the San Filippo Museum in Barrington IL. acquired it and is in possession of it now. I would not stake my life on this chain of custody but It is pretty solid from several sources. This is my story and I am sticking to it.

So as a promotional gig for these two young ladies music video they used this loco. So here is one of my pride and joys for you to enjoy. But first a couple of photos back in the day.

This is how they washed the locos on the CR&N

Now for your listening pleasure.

How did they keep those harps in tune?

Lol Steve,

I have no idea, I was to distracted by. . . well ya know the locomotive, to notice the harps. ;0

These gals are actually pretty talented. I have since listened to other stuff they have produced. I love unconventional music like this.

Ozzie would not be impressed, I couldn’t bear to watch it til the end. Too campy fer me.

But that loco was mighty impressive!

I kept trying to look around the ‘aren’t we cute’ distractions

John I have a penchant for odd music of all sorts. No, I don’t believe OZZY would be impressed. It is cheesy for sure. The Girls certainly are selling their “cute”.

But the loco is dang nice. I have been told this is the oldest if not only surviving Grant Loco. I can’t back that but it is very cool.

Devon, have you tried Lindsey Stirling?

How come your boiler isn’t a wagon top type?

Devon,

Two ( edit: Three Thumbs ) thumbs up for bringing three very dissimilar yet fascinating things together in this one post. Great story. I love covers, especially well done ones. I guess this kinda counts?

Linda thinks that Sharon Osborne would be impressed.

She thought they would make a great mix tape for getting massaged, and I agree.

They appear to do most of the Rock Classic Standards including her favorite “Stairway to Heaven” and it makes good music for a relaxing rub down for us old Baby Boomers.

Well, I thought I could always handle a couple of good looking blondes. I failed, couldn’t last half the video. Man, that was bad. But Thank You for sharing.

Well, they were kind of young. Or I am getting kind of old.

Your not getting old, they just keep getting younger.

You guys are cracking me up. I don’t even know where to begin.

I will address John first cuz he and I have a kinda history. And I have decided that if and when the opportunity ever presents itself I will try to get Johns goat. ( I think he understands and will gladly reciprocate). Well this wont be one of those times. . . Yes it will. John what are you talking about? There you go again assuming that this loco is one of the ones I am building. I am building the #3 a Baldwin straight boiler type. This is the #1 a Grant. Keep up. OK OK don’t get excited I am kidding. Love Ya brother.

In all seriousness. I am purposely holding of on the #1 and #2 until last. They were sister locos and there is very little information (read none) on the details of this loco. As a napkin builder (i didn’t say rivet counter) I don’t have a napkin to work from. However, I have been given a standing invitation from the director of this private museum to examine this loco in detail. I will have tape measure and napkin in hand. This will happen hopefully this spring. Then when the time comes I will make these (#1 and #2) my personal master pieces. I have a twisted, obsessive crush on this locomotive. I consider it mine and it is on loan to the San Fallippo museum.

This photo started it all. I was a St. Maries River Railroad modern diesel guy in HO until I saw this photo of the #1. I knew instantly that I wanted to make this my Garden Railroad and I wanted to know everything about it.

Randy,

I see it as two very similar and one dissimilar things coming together. The loco is beautiful and the twins are beautiful and talented. Then there is Ozzy. He is not beautiful but many consider his music a work of art (I am not a fan per say).

I found it an interesting trichotomy.

I think they are great. After i wasn shown this video I listened to quite a bit of there stuff and love it. A few years back on Americas got talent there was a group called Nutttin but Strings and they were two men rocking violins and this year was the two young men banging on cellos. I like unconventional instruments being used in unconventional ways.
