TrainOps 2012

Bob,

I didnt find working Franklin Falls that dificult, but i am used to the short run around tracks on my layout. I found it adds to the chalenge. so making the tracks a little longer and finding a way to fit in a wye or a turntable is all that is needed. my wye turnouts are 5" R and work fine. Could you extend the wye out beyond the fence and have a remote choke cable operation on the Switch?

And I felt a definite advantage working with Al who has a good head for switching puzzles. It took time but I don’t think there was any point during the three trains we ran that we were scratching heads trying to guess the best next move. We did cheat just a smidge and remove the rocks from the EOT at Franklin Falls just to gain an inch of clearence.

You could end up in Hell for that Jon!

Quite probable. I think that's the name of the town below the Franklin Falls bench-work :)

Don't feel bad, I had to do the same thing.

Stan, Al, et al:

The benchwork at Franklin Falls there can’t go ‘left’ any more than it is, without a lift-out section. We use that as access to the back hill to dump brush/leaves/ash/etc down the hill. And behind the fence isn’t stable ground, so I can’t move the fence back any more than it is. Interesting problem. I think I’ll spool off the discussion to another thread in the Trackwork forum, to get some ideas on possible solutions for the various issues we discovered this past weekend.

OK; understood. Could you afford another 2 inches? If so, you could make a fold-down extension to the tracks 8 or so inches long. That would give the needed length to get cars on the inside (walkway) track in the clear and have room for a bumper at the end.

Cool....post pictures

I’m changing my mind on this one. :o

I know that I was advocating for a longer arrival/departure track, but the more I think about it I like your original design. Sure it’s “convenient” to be able to run around your entire train to be able to sort out the cars, but I think it would make it more interesting to keep your original design.

I think that having a turntable there will change the dynamics and it will be fun to have to split the train to run around the cars.

Turntable definitely, and a third stub track should make the yard a bit nicer, I think.

There was even an extra dog this year! Here’s Greta, Sophie and Piper.

As a former scottie owner and missing him still, I have to ask, is that a scottie?? Who’s dog?? Trains are replaceable. Dogs rule!

Yup, that’s a Scottie. She’s 9, and a rescue dog. We got her about 18 months ago.

You should come to TrainOps in two weeks and meet her! Oh, and run some trains, too.

Bob, thanks for the invite!!

I don’t have any locos that are battery…or dcc, yet. You guys are in or near Boston?

About 45 minutes west, a bit north and east of Worcester.

Well… I bet I could find U! I used to live near there in Boston and toured with the Del Fuegos! That was a lonnggg time ago. Old dogs can usually sniff out a good RR though. I’ll email U for the address.

Need pictures pictures pictures…
