You can’t fix stupid.

Amazingly they survived unharmed by laying flat between the rails, and they then fled the seen after the train stopped. Police have since located the two women and trespassing charges are likely pending.

No word on how many bottles of Tide were necessary to clean their shorts afterwords.

From the title, it sounded like the train survived. Now I’m not so sure.

You’re right! If they had any brains, they would have grabbed onto the undercarriage and hitched a free ride. After all, he was going in their direction.

When I was a kid, some other kids in the neighborhood would walk the trestle near my house. Even as a kid, I knew that if train came along I would have no chance to outrun it. So, when I was 6 or 7, I had more brains then those two “ladies”. I hope they are found guilty of trespassing and whatever else the authorities can throw at them.

As for their underwear, there aint no cleaning them after something like that. Just throw them out and go buy new down at the local Walmart.

Holy cow! That was too, too close!

My imagination just went wild thinking of what would have happened if they’d laid down on their backs .

Mike , with apologies to those possessing no imagination .

When I was a kid, I was told by the guys who worked at Appleyard that, if I ever found myself in extremis like those two, with no other good options, the best thing to do was to do exactly what they did.  I didn't believe him then, and, until I saw the video the other day, still didn't.  I guess I was wrong.

Steve, it might depend on what pound rail was used for the track. I mean, it might not work so well on a branch-line or other track laid with smaller rail.

I hit a guy at 22mph underneath the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. We were running on an approach, so I was slowing down anyway (track speed normally was 35) and had a fairly light train. The guy was sitting on the left hand rail. Plugged it about 100’ from hitting him… Heard the thunk (much like hitting a deer or other animal) and thought the guy was dead. He crawled out about 5 minutes later between the 2nd and 3rd traction motor on a Dash 9. Not much room underneath, but he didn’t have even a scratch.

Just food for thought… here’s how much room isn’t down there …

This is, I think 115 lb rail.

(Gah. Link fixed. Stupid Facebook.)

FRA requirements require a minimum of 3"-6" from the top of the rail to the bottom of the plow/pilot. Food for thought on that one as well.

There is a very experienced German contributor to Yootoob who uses the name Bidone 67 .

He takes videos in all weathers and one of his shots was taken from his camera between the rails , with an unexpected result .

It was mid winter and really very cold .

The sequence shows the steam loco running above the camera , no problem . But as it’s freezing cold , things don’t quite pan out as required----and you can see it coming , a damn great icicle hanging from one of the carriages , dead centre .

Wham ! Camera struck hard . interesting glimpses of different bits of train . Close up shots of ballast .

Camera , surprisingly suffers very little damage , as proven by resulting video . But its mass meant it moved . If it was your head and not a camera , I believe that the result would be similar to trepanning (look it up)

Now , you’re going to ask for the address of the video . Sorry , I don’t know , and as much as I like trains , I am not about to trawl through dozens of videos to find it .

But it shows that even the most professional cameraman can be caught out .

I never venture onto tracks unless I have a companion with no vested interest in my demise keeping a lookout .

There’s all manor of debris that can get tangled up on and under a train. Branches, cables, metal straps, all can be lethal when being dragged by a train. That’s why its never a good idea to get real close to one, keep some distance, especially if its a fast train since there’s less time to spot any potential hazard dangling from a car.

Please, I wasn’t recommending it, it was just suggested to me as a possibility to save my dumb a$$ if I found myself in extremis. (Look up that word is it is unfamiliar.)

Steve , I was with you until you quoted in Latin .

It left me wondering what extreme bits you were trying to save .

I know which bits I’d save , but as this is (allegedly) a family forum , I shall desist from describing them . Except to say that I sympathise with brass monkeys .

Mike , in a deep voice .

OK , here’s an edit . How the heck do I post a reply with a quote without my reply appearing in the quote box ?
