Yep. I remember watching a UP freight going by out in the desert several years ago. Heard a strange noise getting closer and closer… turned out it was a long section of metal strap, the kind they used to hold lumber in place, being dragged along the side of the train. Anyone standing too close would likely have been badly cut, at least.

I’ve seen this first hand when photographing the Strates Carnival train. One of their coaches had a strip of molding come loose from the front and was sticking out a good three feet just waiting to skewer some foamer!
