Trackwork at the new Majestic

Figure I’d start a new thread since this work has taken on a life of its own. I’ll pull more pictures into here from the Post-TrainOps trackwork thread.

Anyway, the wye is in place, as are the two concrete arches. Here’s a mockup of how the rockwork and fill will go. Red lines will be rock walls, mortared together. Green lines are track-level fill.

Starting the stonework for the supporting walls and all. I pulled a lot of the loosely-piled stone from the left of the mine area here, and then mortared some in place more vertically. This will let me build some more outbuildings for the mine itself. The wall next to the walkway here is about a foot high, give or take with the rolling of the walkway, but its about half done to the right of the arch bridge.

I like the idea of a “Y”. It made me go out to my neglected RR and see if I have room for one somewhere.
Where would one find an all-weather, outside all the time “Y” switch?

Picking this thread back up. Starting to assemble some of the track for the wye, and figure out where the rockwork needs to be moved around to.

Three switches in place, and all but about three feet of the inner wye tracks.

The ‘right’ side of the wye here will have a seven or eight foot tail, and the other end will go to the relocated Majestic Colliery.

Are you just using the small viaducts as fill ? I see the one under the plate girder bridge hasn’t moved and wondering if it’s just gonna get filled in. Maybe I missed something but as you know I do not read well .

The cast cement viaducts will be used. Once I get the track in place I’ll cement them in place, build some stone walls, and fill with dirt. Then ballast. The viaducts will be needed, as this area gets some rain runoff.

I remember you did mention about the rain runoff. But I guess I was curious about the one under the plate girder. Was thinking I personally would move that under the right hand curve of the wye with the other one.

I should spin this work off into its own thread.

Tail of the wye bent and roughly in place.

Last handful of posts will be out of order since I moved them to this thread from the Post-TrainOps work thread.

Wall on the right hand side of the wye is complete. Need to backfill it after the mortar sets, and get ballast down.

And started on the left side.

Aristocraft made WYE switches and they do come up now and again for sale.
I have one on my RR and it works well.
My Wye sits outside the Main Yard and it gives exiting trains the option to run one direction or the other round the RR.

All that Rockery is looking great Bob and the Wye looks right at home with those eye pleasing curves.

Hi Todd,
Yes there is a new one on the ebay for $300.00. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
They were about $90.00 new back in the day.

Wye switches are cool, but they can be built with standard ones, I used #6’s when I built mine. The only picture I could find that shows a wye switch makes me cold…

I realized that after some thought. (I have been diagnosed with CRS – Can’t Remember Sh#t)!
I thought if the Wye was more reasonable in price I might use one.

I have 2 that I have never used. I could bring them to the show this weekend if someone “needs” them.

Yea, this wye only has one Y-switch, the other are a pair of left and rights…

Why does the wye only have one Y-switch. Ok, Wye does the why only have one Y-switch. Ok, Y does the wye only have one why-switch?

maybe, because with three Y- switches it would need a larger landgrab?

btw…
for short locos and cars one can build a functional wye with just three R1 switches and three R1 curves (plus the legs) so, wye not?
