My gondola kit arrived today. Many Thanks Dave it looks great and will be the perfect start to my design. This morning I acquired a essential part of my plan for $10 and got to work on that tonight. I’m excited for this challenge and will post a photo or 2 soon but it is a secret for now.
Todd
Here is a photo of what I hope to build. At a yard sale this Summer I bought a really neat book “Kinsey Photographer, The Locomotive Portraits” and it is filled with photos of mostly logging engines and their crews. This little guy caught my fancy and I thought it would be neat to build one or something like close to it. The contest is a great reason and Daves fine kit is a nice starting point. The speeder was built by the Motor Appliance Corporation and was used on the Sauk River Lumber Company. I need to dig a bit deeper and maybe find another photo of this but if I need to fill in the blanks myself so be it.

That’s very cool, Todd. You planning to power this puppy, too?
Hello Again Yes I’m going to power it. I bought a cheapo RC car and at this point it is cut up into pieces and I’m fitting the battery box and trying to figure out the wheel arrangement. It is slow going. I was going to cut up a truck and use it to pivot one axle and fix the other but then thought why overly complicate it. The axles on a bobber caboose are 5" on center and this will be 5.5 so not that bad. Currently a journal box experiment is drying on my table. I’m a bit further along than this but you will get the idea.

That needs an old lady in a rocking chair on it…
That would be a hoot Ken to have Granny riding a rocking chair. The photo caption paraphrased " visiting dignataries and 2 “indian” women hitching a ride into the woods to pick berries." It does look like a hillbilly setup. Build Update: This morning I tested the chasis on the indoor tracks (yes the Christmas tree (fake) is still up) and it ran very well even going through the 4’ diameter curves with the now 6" fixed wheelbase but I did leave alot of play in the axles. The original RC car was speedy with 4 AA batteries so I reduced it down to 3 and used a jumper wire and it is still a bit fast but not bad. Now that the hard part is done it is all down hill from here right?

Maybe you should’ve gone for an R/C Airboat rig…
Hi Todd, I think that it should be an GRANNY sitting in the Rocking Chair with a CORN COB PIPE, I bet she was the COOK at the LOGGING CAMP!
Nice project Todd. Looking close at the prototype photo it looks like that was an executive outing with a few of the wives along for a picnic. The crew stayed well back in the picture at the rear of the car.
Look forward to the build Todd! I have these pictures that might help you. This one wasn’t made by MAC but similar design. Found them a few years ago and thought it might be a cool project someday.

Still trying to find the site these came from for more info but have come up empty handed
Aaron, Here’s another shot of the same loco while still in service…
Thanks alot for the photos Aaron and Joe. I have been trying to find evidence of such without much luck.
I knew the guys on the front in the old timey photo were leaning against a hood and it is nice to now have a photo to get a better idea of what it was like. Of course these things would have been delivered from the Motor Appliance Corporation and then would have been modified to fit whatever the RR needed so I plan on doing the same.
It looks like these buggies had a bell and a horn and a rather beefy exhaust. Interesting spot for a brake wheel but I suppose these things were pretty basic and rugged so Granny might find herself sitting on the deck and not in a comfy rocking chair.
Thanks
Todd
Notice the interesting polling pockets… it looks to me like the whole end beam is a cast piece…
A M.A.C. Speeder, VERY cool! I built a speeder based on one of these. I cannot post a pic of it from my phone but it used an LGB flatcar MDC Big Hustler cab and hood and drive chassis. I look forward to seeing this. edit: pic a posted

Made some progress today. The deck is planked and the cab is cut out from plexi and styrene and the glue is drying. For the roof I have a section that came from a caboose where I hacked off the cupola to use on my rotary.
I came back here to check out the photos again and OH NO I forgot to make the cutout section that is on the right side of the cab. I wonder what was there? The fuel tank? It might be too late to go back and redo it… I never said it would be an exact model of the prototype. LOL
Now that the ice has melted I took the flat bed out onto the track and gave it a go. The speed was fine out in the real world but I might actually remove the jumper and put the fourth battery back in for more power up the grades. Down grade I was able to coast.
The next step is tackling the hood then it is on to painting and details.

I did take some photos but the software I use to shrink em is at my office so no posted photos today.
Good news is I went back and carefully cut out the notch under the cab on the right where the fuel tank I think goes.
Coming along.

I Left My picture editor at the office… Now come on… are you really trying to pull a Doug on us and keep it a secret by saying that the pics won’t load…
