Mike e-mailed me just before his system crashed. He can’t log on to LSC, among other things. I don’t know whether he can do e-mail at this time.
I think he needs to take his pooter in and have it looked at.

I’m running OPERA 7.51
IE gets only used in an emergency i.e. when some nitwit designed a damn webpage that doesn’t conform to 3W but works with IE grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox get used to test that my websites work as expected with all of them. Whenever possible I keep a safe distance from Uncle Bill’s products. Yes, I’m biased, I don’t need the aggravation.
I see from your comment that I am not alone in mistrusting the gating mob .
Mike
To join the fray, I use Firefox on both my XP box, and my Mac. I like all the plugins you can get for it to help your surfing. And its stable, AND free.
My 2 cents.
Well , chaps , my computer has been taken to the cleaners and had its mouth washed out with soap .
Now all I have to do is stop using downloads and shut the gates .
Thank you all for the helpful emails , particularly Timmy , and John Bouck .
What a nice helpful crowd of chaps we have here .
Makes you want to stay , dunnit ?
Mike
BTW , my other computer has an engineer programme in it , and every time I use it , there’s a "this windows is probably a copy " sign glares at me , and " you have probably been sold (something nasty ) " So their negative approach has put me right off , making a customer captive is not good public relations .
I have to say they must be worried if they have to do that . Dictators have to watch their backs , I suppose .
Mike Morgan said:Mike you definitely do "not" want to stop using downloads. You just want to stop downloading and installing BETA software. However, you "do" want to download all Critical Windows Updates / Security Patches and updates to your Anti Virus application.

Glad that all is working again
Timmy ,
yes , you are quite right , I didn’t mean it literally . I have already updated security as best I can .

Mike,
With your low opinion of “Uncle Bill’s” wares, why don’t you start with switching to a different browser along with the mail appy. Bob recommended FireFox, I do too, even though I personally use OPERA.
There are alternatives! In some instances there is no reason to put up with Microsoft! And yes, this doesn’t just apply to browsers and mail.
And remember being on the leading edge i.e. getting suckered for beta vers.; is being on the bleeding edge!
Cheers!
Hans ,
Thanks , I shall have a go . I tried Firefox before , and it was OK–in fact very fast-- until I loaded Google Earth . Everything went downhill . But , as Timmy pointed out , there was probably a problem with the computer teetering on the edge , so now I have a backup , I will try .
Mike
Remember also, that you can have numerous browsers (all functional) at the same time on your computer.
I looked at the Opera thing , but it had the word Beta with it , so I didn’t touch it .
I downloaded Firefox , and it’s even faster than I remember .Presumably , Tim , the protection in the computer will look after any browser ?
Mike
Hi Mike
Your Anti Virus / Anti Spyware software is for your computer as a whole and is not specific to any browser. The Windows Critical Updates and Security Patches function the same way.
Blimey , Timmy ,that was quick . Thanks .
Mike

Point well taken

You thought this was all over , didn’t you ?
Well , this time , it’s YAHOO ! Try the new email thing , they said , if you don’t want it , just hit the revert to sanity button . Well , I did , I didn’t , and I did , in that order .
Except that now I can’t get logged on to my favourite website , so I use Mozilla instead .
Can’t contact Yahoo as usual (why do these companies not want us to tell them they got it wrong again?) ,
so may change my computer completely away from Yahoo .
If you wonder why , I have filled out two or three customer survey forms which ask you to add any comments to the fulsome praise they put in the questions . So , each time , I have added "please give an address to contact in case of problems .
Ah , we didn’t really want suggestions , that’s just so’s you’d think we care , which of course we don’t .
Anyway , what’s a good alternative email provider ?
Mike
ps , this is not the old computer that gave all the previous problems , this computer is a "sorted out by competent engineer " model .
Mike
I think you may be a little confused here. Your ISP is BT Yahoo. As such, your email is also provided through them. If you are simply asking for a different email provider there are many… and free at that. Try HOTMAIL or Google mail. If you are asking for a different ISP, there are also many. However, you need to check locally in your area to see what is offered there as ISPs are for the msot part regional.
