Cale if you’re looking for a good loco for kids that piko 0-6-0 would be a good choice. Out of the box it’s rugged and durable. It’d be pretty easy to convert it to battery/RC

My local hobby town had the Thomas set for $235. I was tempted to get it but im sure if I wait I can do much better price wise. Plus the boss with me.
I think lantz is down to $167 and Robbie at RLD is said to be pretty low too!
Al Kramer, ‘ana.kramer’ has them for $159.99 ‘Buy it Now’. I have now purchased three complete sets of each (minus the track), from Al, plus additional rolling stock.

Del,
Al’s eBay name is ‘ana.kramer’. I received my first two Thomas sets downunder, this afternoon. I only ordered them a few days ago. Fiirst impression is do not let the wife see them!! One Thomas is now AWOL, confiscated by SWMBO and is on display in her office (she is awaiting the arrival of Percy and has put a claim on him as well). Second Thomas has hit the rails, followed by four coaches. Runs beautifully straight out of the box. One will need symmetrical hook couplers fitted, as even on the ten-foot diameter curves I use, one hook coupler seems to disengage as the cars travel through the curve (cars retained by remaining hook engagement). There have been several reports of coaches disconnecting (although this malady does not seem to happen to all). Some minor tyre ‘squeal’, even on my larger radii track (long fixed wheelbase of coach).
Slow speed operation through switchwork (Aristo wide-radius) is exceptional (smooth as silk at lowest possible speed setting). One 'problem' observed is that the loco is susceptible to abrupt stopping when power removed (even when travelling very slowly to a halt). Moving off from rest is extremely smooth. Overall impression is that B'mann have got it right!!!!!!

Well I broke down and ordered a Thomas set from Ridge rd. Its a little more then e-bay but I have always like ridge rd service and im not a big e-bay fan to start with. I think it will make a great present for the kids. My daghter is 5 and son 11 months. Bewteen the two they will get years of use.
Shawn,
I think you find it to be a great Christmas present. A couple of years ago, i gave all the grandkids a complete collection of all the Thomas stories. When any of them stay over, we use it for bed time stories. It also works for quiet times. All the Thomas stories are great and work very well for personal relationships between parents and kids or even grandparents and kids. I think it is a great way for the kids to grow with Thomas and an introduction to other trains.
Gee, and to think that I got by with being read “The Little Train That Could,” and “The Train to Timbuktu.” Oh, the humanity! How could my parents have deprived me so?
