Thomas Arrives...pics

Well, if my kids are Excited on Christmas Morning as I am right now…it’ll all be Hunky-Dory The Man in the Brown Truck dropped the box off earlier as reported just a bit ago here on LSC…I had to lock myself in the rec-room with my camera, some track, and a few parts…you may notice below that this Loco is HUGE!!! He dwarfs a LGB Box Car, and our HLW Mack…not sure where scale will come in to play here, but if it runs as nice as it looks-Bachmann has a winner. This is a TOY TRAIN! no back-head detail, no rivets, nada…just a beautiful little blue locomotive that looks just like the latest CG interpretation. Annie and Clarabell are nice as well…NO detail there either, again folks, this is first and foremost a TOY! the roofs are held on by gravity, and there are no seats. Packaging is nice too, looks “Just like” any other Thomas box you’d see at toy retailers! I did my best to get a few shots and upload without spoiling the surprise for my kids…did not run it…may try that after they go to bed tonight. looks like a RC/Battery conversion will be a snap as well…without looking inside, it all seems hollow-and very lightweight, still may consider a trail install in Annie? Side-rods are plastic.

Merry Christmas! Cale

forgot to mention the roof slides off for easy insertion of figures or a nice convertible look!

Center Driver is blind too.

That looks fun. You said it comes in a set?

Yes, Thomas arrives with Annie and Clarabell and Percy ships with 2 Troublesome Trucks (old school gray wagons) here is the packing:

Nice that Bachmann got them here in time for Christmas.

Cale,

I used the info you posted about the Trainworld ad for our friends. Thanks for the info.

Of course, with the headlamp in the position it's in, Thomas should only be pulling mineral or empty wagons :P ... or, according to an older code, be running light engine.

Rivet,rivet,rivet …

I’ve ordered a Percy and wagons set from RRS. If they arrive for Christmas, well and good; if they don’t, that’s OK too

Cale, please be sure to post pix of the insides when you get there, interesting in the drivetrain.

Regards, Greg

Wow, it looks pretty big in the pictures.

Jon.

The Bachmann called it “T Scale” on his fora earlier…could be “BAT Scale” Big A$$ Thomas…Jon, the pictures aren’t deceiving it Really is that big…really chunky for kids hands!

I’d almost bet it is 2x the size of the Lionel Thomas (from what I remember one of those looking like)

cale

I have one Lionel Thomas left. One of the new runs. It’s almost 10.5 inches long from bumper to bumper. It looks like the new Bachmann Thomas you have pictured is almost 13.5 inches not counting the couplers. That’s a considerable size increase. I need to check them out in person. I’m still interested in them…

I’ve only see the Lionel loco run once, at the SELSTS a few years ago…again, it did appear much smaller (all the way around)…when compared in my minds eye-see sig for disclaimer

I hope to have mine converted to battery before the 25th, should be a breeze once the RC gear arrives.

Interested is good, I really think Bachmann did well on this one.

Here is a full size JPEG of the Parts Diagram included, you can make out the running gear here! Pictures coming Really soon! cale

I’m a member of LSOL… Thanks for the new tear down pictures. This thing doesn’t seem to have much weight. Not sure I like the drive mechanism either.

Jon.

Jon,

it’s very light, wouldn’t go as far to say “fragile”, but lightweight none the less.–not that it isn’t chunky for little hands… There is a little bit of weight that can be seen below the motor, over the rear and mid axle, but compared to my LGB #50 diesel, Thomas is a feather.–easier for weaker individuals to lift- ie:kids?

I’m really surprised they didn’t use an Anniversary drive…but while thinking about it, I deducted it was prob easier to create yet another drive than to adapt the Annie to the eye mech…pure speculation there, but makes sense to me. The drive seems robust enough for it’s intended purpose, dragging Annie and Clarabel around the loop, but prob wouldn’t get along with a little one trying to push it down the track w/o power to the motor…

I mentioned to a friend earlier, that the plastic Thomas and the coaches are made from is different from any other Bachmann offering I’ve got here. It “feels” like the Thomas toys the kids have…ok, I know it’s a toy, and it feels “familiar”…maybe that was done on purpose, makes sense to me…touch one and you’ll know what I mean.

The Kids will love this and with that demographic being the main thrust for sales, Thomas should fly off the shelves.

cale

Cale.
You will be able to leave the pcb on the end of the motor.
The way they have the pcb wired is OK for suppression. In fact you will not have to add any RF chokes.

Nice!

Thanks for the pix Cale! The drive train looks sufficient, but adding extra weight or load might not be a good idea… maybe I will have to doublehead!
