Large Scale Central

This is never going to end

Meanwhile out here in N. California it is clear, sunny and the current temperature is 65°F. Last night was ~29°F, but we have not been freezing most nights. That has been typical for the last month.

We had ~30" of rain between late October and the end of December, but there has been virtually no rain since. Our average yearly rainfall is ~40" and the high rainfall is ~90", all occurring between November 1st and April 30th. Typically there are no ‘summer rains’ here. We are really concerned about the lack of moisture this (2011) year. At the current rate, there are going to be lots of dry wells and empty ponds.

No at all bragging. Just pointing out that the weather continually changes. As David wrote above, “One can not fight the weather.”

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Our high on the High Desert was 43 and our low last night was 26. Jerry is right. While most of the nation is getting lots of snow I had to water plants today!

Just when I thought the freezing rain and sleet was done it starts to snow again with a coating on top of everything that was just shoveled… GRRRRRR

That’s a lot of snow. 'round here, they’re saying they might have to cancel 4th of July. (Exaggeration)

Oscar’s snow-blower earned its keep today. He just got it and I figured that’d keep the snow away for a few years. Didn’t work that way.

That is because a frustrated Pennsylvanian shot the big rodent before he could see it.

If we had the weather down here in Mississippi you guys up north are getting, it would shut things down. The most snow I have ever seen at one time is 9" and I was young then. I have only seen one white Christmas and I was young then also. But we did get 3" last month and I was able to run my trains in it.
Ron

The last time that overgrowed lying rat said there’d be an early spring it started snowing and didn’t quit until after Easter!

I’d need flame throwers to git rid of this…

I figure, it will melt sometime before July…

Well that depends on the place yesterday Geoff. In the Milwaukee area, once it stopped snowing around mid-day, I gather the sun shone very brightly. Incidentally being reminded that WI is known as The Badger State, there is a saying that if the badger looks out of his sett and sees the sun on 2nd. February he knows winter isn't finished with. Another ancient name for the day here is Candlemass Day.

In SW England it rained most of the day but we did have a sunny interlude, about midday, of around one hour. So if Punxsutawney Phil has relatives over here maybe they got out just long enough for a shadow!!.

Here are a few shots I took yesterday from High Point (highest point in NJ) and only 3 miles from my house. You get a 360 dgree view. See theres more to NJ then Camden and Newark LOL Looking East

Looking West. In center is Delaware River and where NY, NJ, and PA meet.

Looking southwest lake Marcia and Cross country ski center

Looking south. My house would be just off to the left at the base of the ridge.

Nice pictures, Shawn. I took this picture Wednesday. Even with zoom, the mountains look so much smaller through the camera than with the naked eye. My house is beyond the water tower, between the lower ridges and the mountains. Ralph

Today is day 4 of our winter storm. Tuesday we got ice. It hasn’t been above freezing since early Tuesday. We’ve had lows near 10 and highs in the 20’s. Wednesday we had rolling blackouts. Today we got 6" of snow on top of the ice. Tomorrow they predict a high in the low 40’s, but last night they predicted less than one inch of snow for today. Now they are predicting winter mix on Sunday. Great weather for Super Bowl Week. Almost makes you miss July’s 100+ temperatures.

Roger in freezing North Texas

At least trains could get to the Super Bowl! Planes sure can’t!

Look at the bright side…you could live here:

Ken,
I’ve seen similar conditions in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan many years ago.
Better them than me
