Mike,
Here in Texas,
we would call him a:
CAPITALIST.

Here’s a quote you might add to your repertoire:

“No matter how hard the Wind of Evil blows,
it cannot extinguish the Flame of Truth.”
(the Dalai Lama)

If my memory serves me, this is not the first time that your Tommie’s
have been on the recieving end of American friendly fire…
I seem to recall something similar occcured in Afganistan a couple years ago…
Not quite so much fuss made about it at the time,
the blood lust of the Chicken Hawks, the Righteousness of the War against “Ter’rism”
and the Axis of Evil, clouded peoples minds.

Dave…

Dave,

Very nice quote! Let’s see if the meaning registers.

Yeah and the same happened to the Canadians, lots of fuss about that one. The two pilots got off with two black eyes, the families of the fallen Canadians, and people who paid attention, were very surprised at the legal proceedings that applied to the “incedence”.
Yes, the USA is a different jurisdiction and “different” has more than one meaning!

Hans.
Thanks for reminding me they were Canadians…
But they serve the same Queen…

Dave…

No sensible argument here , then .
All I said was do not let anyone divide our loyalty to the Allied troops .
And in reply is the usual anti Mike rant , and some divisive bile from the usual quarter .
Now us patriots know who not to trust .

What did you do in the war , daddy?

Mike

There have been plenty of US on US “friendly fire” incidents. I would not be surprised that if one takes a look going back to 'Nam, Korea, WWII and WWI that there were incidents of Brit on US “friendly fire.”

All are unfortunate, to be sure, but that is all. Stuff happens in war. People do die in wartime. War is not a video game. Deal with it. Britain and the US will remain allies, primarily because we have “long term shared interests,” as Winston Churchill put it, not to mention the shared spilled blood in defeating the enemies of our way of life, and your right to spout foolishness.

Dave,

I didn’t know which Brits you were referring to, but I distinctly remember that “Air-Cowboy” Schmidt, along with his buddy, did a number on a Canadian platoon; apart from the four casualties there were plenty of injured people.

Now to the recurring “What did you do in the war, daddy?” question. My dad was busy cooking “better than usual” slop in the Swiss army during WW2, I always thought that was a very good cause.

Myself I made damn sure that I wouldn’t waste too much time in the Swiss army and by choosing my country of choice very carefully, wouldn’t end up serving some lunatic cause in some Godforsaken corner of the globe.

Some seem to think that "Jug Ears’ " mother is our Queen and that she rules us, as in the past. We are and have been, for quite some time, an independent nation and “Queeny” is just a symbol. Most here worship the mighty American buck, just like everyone else, and pay very little heed to Queeny.

By the way; I ride a Sears lawn tractor around; spreading my farts far and wide. I now, also, have a 3 wheeled electric scooter, which will be my second vehicle. The tractor is for fetching “Stuff”, with a trailer, from Home Despot, while the scooter is my “Sunday-go-to-meeting” vehicle. If I have a date; I have a smaller trailer for it with a seat, for the lucky wench…!!!

When I have to travel; if I can’t go by train (Via Rail); I stay at home; thus save spreading too much methane beyond the city limits.

I let the cows spread outside the city limits, and they give me an exclusive inside.

Steve, Have you ever consider that if there would be less foolishness spouted, there would be fewer wars? Of course the other remedy would be: boxing matches by the heads of state refereed by an international jury, all decisions being final and no appeals possible. Wouldn’t that sort things out in a hurry!?! - No old farts need apply, unless they are extremely fit or foolish or both! (my observation: Not many fit, but a lot of them foolish!) - Since training for a boxing match is relatively inexpensive - compared with the hullabaloo of money spent on armaments - the smart people could get to work figuring out where best to apply all that money. - Would make for better TV than some of the “Reality Shows”. - Of course the jury would need to run a coherency test prior to the match to check for doping of any kind i.e. name the capital of …; how do you spell …; failure of the test would mean forfeiture of the match. That should weed out most of the dope(s).

Mike,
As to your question;
“what did you do in the war, daddy?”

I was just a ground pounder, 11B…
4th Inf… RVN 69

What unit were YOU with?

Dave…

Dave , my question was aimed at the usual detractors , not yourself .
I volunteered for the Armed Forces when I was 17 and spent over 22 years doing various things . Mainly tactical radio devices , and radar . This included patrol duties a la infantry , and anti terrorist work .
The detractors are dragging the post off the point . Remember , let us make sure we back up our troops . All allied troops . Do not let the trendies cause animosity , the Allied troops are doing what they are paid for . If you disagree with the politicians putting them there , I suggest you either agree that we should back the allied troops , or start another thread about the rights and wrongs elsewhere .

Hey Fred,

Cold enough for you???

You forgot to mention that we’re independent enough that Lord of Crossharbour had to relinquish his Canadian citizenship prior to being (k)nighted by HRM.

I guess your dates - the lucky wenches - don’t need to freshen up in this weather, what with riding in a trailer. Should be fresh enough.

Sheesh I’d like to be a fly on the wall when you get to the restaurant and the “thawing out” starts.

You remember Eskimo Nell, don't you? 40 below is a gentle spring day.

Mike,

The troops don’t want support for what they’re doing,
what they want is an end to this war and to COME HOME alive.
That I can whole heartedly support.

From the lead up to today, it’s all been manipulation
of facts and infomation by the MSM to justify an illegal war.
Singling our Murdoch for profiting from it, is very narrow.
The news today is discussing the millions/billions of US dollars
shipped to Iraq at the begining of the war that is unaccounted for.
Profiteering is rampant, from unbid contracts to politically connected
contractors to Rupert selling newspapers. The list would be too
long and waste too much band width to write them all down.

Yes, let’s support the troops and bring them home alive…
Almost 10% of the US troops KIA in Iraq have been from
my home state of Texas.

Dave…

Well , that produced a lot of the sort of info I was looking for .
Thanks ,
Mike

ps , You posted that last one whilst I was writing this , Dave , thank you for being honest and not dragging the question away again .
I never said the troops were there to enjoy themselves , they do need the support of the public ,.I remember doing service where I was
scared witless , and not being a masochist , wanted to go home —just like any serviceman would . But they don’t , do they ? They keep their part
of the bargain , let us keep ours by supporting them , and not making them feel let down .
The most soul destroying comment I heard overseas was made by a newsman , looking at a body and saying “what a waste of life” . This life had
been wasted defending the newsman’s safety to broadcast such crap . He didn’t see it that way , of course .

Chris,

That must have been before my time, don’t remember her. Remember I only got here 38 years ago.

And I’m still learning, it is a welly hard thingy to get used to all the different thingys.

What do you suggest that we do about folks who sucker punch us, like Tojo, Hitler and Bin Laden? Shall we, like a fraternity pledge, bend over, grab our ankles and say, “Thank you sir, may I have another?”

I would advise you to place your money on Bush, and perhaps spot OBL a point or two. Remember that OBL is on dialisis. That would be a match that I would pay good money to watch.

HJ, I really had no idea that you were that foolish.

Cheers,

The young men that I talk to, friends of my son, to a man want to finish the job and then come home. They are the same as was I when I spent 22 years in the USMC and the USN. They volunteered to do a job, and want to do the job well.

Were you drafted? That might explain your attitude.

Do you believe everything that you hear on PMSNBC?

It is unfortunate that there are rotten apples who have no scruples. They are probably Democrats. Have you heard that Her Speakership wants a USAF 757 with a staff of 42 to fly her and her family around? I thought she was concerned about the “Culture of Corruption?”

If there were fewer people lending aid and comfort to the enemy by calling for our defeat, this war would have been over a long time ago, with far fewer casualties. I would say that at least half of the casualties can be directly attributed to the “Peace at any Cost” crowd, perhaps more.

As my parents used to say during Big 2, “Don’t you know that there is a war on?”

Oh, Gawd, another Canuck heard from. I think that flying a F-106 qualities as active service.

What service did you preform?

Ah but Steve!

I clearly wrote “heads of state”, didn’t I? See how foolish I am? And then I added the bit about the “coherency test”, that could be a real hurdle for some, if you know what I mean?? And think of the international jury!

As I’ve noted before, the Canadian army didn’t want me, and I don’t imagine the British army would have been any more enthusiastic, conscription having ended some years before I was liable. (The RAF, quite properly, turned me down flat – I didn’t have the skills they needed).

And I don’t remember that that particular F-106 saw action.
All honour to those who did, and do.
