The tale of two bridges

Getting ready for the second phase I realized I would need a couple of bridges in the near future. On my regular rounds of the local area I’ve often admired one RR overpass heading towards Emigsville.( I’ll post pics when I take some). Anyway I felt that with a little modelers licence it would work crossing another track just as well as it works crossing a road. One of the things that drew me to his bridge is simplicity. No rivets or bolt detail to worry about. Four I beams with steel plate spacers. Stacked stone abutments with just a bit of offset for stability. That said here’s where I am after about three hours

Main bridge structure is together, but it is just .125 plastic strips. Bridge will be just wide enough to hold ties. Dave

We must see pictures of this prototype!

Looking good so far. I would like to see some prototype shots as well.

Jon.

Of the prototype that is - Come on David - get with the program

Pics will show up Friday when I get over that way again

Sorry you all will have to wait for better pics. The rains won’t cooperate. Also I must correct myself on the lack of rivets. I’m going to post two pics, thefirst is what I see o my regular passes of this bridge. The second is the same pic lightened up as much as I can, and after removing as much shadow as posible I can start to make out the extra details. This bridge is solid rust and the first pic is what you see on a good day, as the sun does not get to it. Sorry for the mis information, but I still might not use rivets.

Am I gonna have to drive down there!!!

Yea. You or Scott. It’s really like trying to take a pic in the corner between your shed and fence no sun light

Try an overcast day. And/or zoom in (if you can) so you don’t see any sky - then your camera will set the exposure based on the darker area.

Saw a guy yesterday using a hand held graduated black filter. He held it in front of the lens to darken the sky so he could get a good exposure of ground level stuff. Net idea.

I’m a photographic hack. Don’t really know a thing on the technical side.
But had the picture turned out well, I think we might see 7 feet of this bridge
Where is the bridge? I’ll look it up on Google Earth
Ralph

Jon, I understand what you mean, and I was zoomed in as far as My camera would still about 50’? to bridge.

Ralph, Your educated guess could be close to the mark. Bridge is a one lane overpass in Emigsville Pa. The bridge may be 12’ total span. Under normal conditions due to position of bridge it is in the shadows. As this is a two way road under the bridge and a well traveled road you can get to within maybe 35’ when dry.
Follow George street out of York Pa (north) and as you get into Emigsville you’ll see the tracks on the east side of George st. The tracks come into Emigsville from the southeast/east and just north of the bend line in the tracks is where it crosses the road.

I want to use it to cross a railline

I think I found your bridge on Google Earth. No street view though. I did find this interesting bridge a little north. Looks like the tracks cross some old tracks here. Ralph

Ralph, hard to see your photo, but going back to google to check address that bridge near 3502 N George is over a stream that parallels George and goes under church for a few feet. Maybe a collection area. I go by there a bit and you can tell it’s a low area. Thought the stream ran farther. We do have a lot of flood zones around here.

David,
I can see track going under the left side of the original. Also has the height posted.
I don’t think they would have this posted over a creek or small stream.
Cool the things you can check out from afar.
Ralph

Tomorrows sunny I’ll go check’em both.Maybe even get viewable pics.

East Side

West Side

No Rivets Now for Ralph here are pics of the George St. bridge

One of three arches

Over old road Only thing under third arch is dirt So now I’m back to no extra detail and simple I beam construction on my two bridges

I have a low tunnel on the Dusty and Dirty. When I see how short that height under the bridge is I don’t feel so bad! A little short of that standard 16-foot and higher I see in the West!
