I was in Rockhill today doing an inspection of the “Garage” for suitability. I discovered a couple of issues, but over all I think it is usable. At first, it will be just storage until we have the living areas settled. Then, the contents will move two blocks down the street to self storage while I outfit it as a shop and indoor railroad. It has no electric. A sub panel install is on my contractor to do list. A few overall pics…
Nice to hear that it’s useable, Jon. You’d mentioned that the exterior “wainscoting” might be hiding water damage, but perhaps nothing too major, right?
And nice size, yeah you’ll get a lot in there.
I forget, is your plan to make an elevated line extend from the shed? Or to just keep the layout in the shed (I just noticed the category you placed this post under)? Either way, very cool!
the plan in the other thread indicates, that the shed is 12 and a half foot wide.
and how long? about 50 foot?
that would be more space, than what i did fill with over 430 foot of track.
how much track do you still have?
It looks like some interior plywood has some water damage and possibly mold? Hopefully it’s not too bad that Jon can’t repair it. But if he has to tear it down, oh darn room for a bigger shed right?
Tons of nailers and screwing material there. I think it’s screaming for a nice shelf layout with storage and work area underneath.
It’s 13’ 9" wide x 24 ’ 3" outside. Take off about 9" from both for interior.
I have all the track from my indoor plus quite a bit that was still in boxes.
@Cliff_Jennings I’d like to do an indoor switching puzzle and extend outdoors along one or two walls.
@ctown2 Yes that is probably mold. I think I can treat it. There was a roof penetration at one point that wasn’t properly repaired. It looks like it still leaks a bit. There was heavy rain on Saturday, just one day prior to my first look inside and there were no wet spots on the floor.
Once roof is repaired, pull off the plywood and spray for mold. I would absolutely plan on insulating walls and ceiling. It makes a huge difference in livability. I would also plan for a small window AC unit to be mounted somewhere. This is something I wish I had done. Now I have no empty space anywhere to mount one so I’m considering a portable unit.
A mini-Split? I have one in my garage shop, cools and heats 3 rooms easily… Your sq footage with insulation would probably be 1 ton, least expensive one. And it mounts high on the wall, usually out of the way of most stuff.
i wouldn’t use a split of any size for that situation, where the infected air should be extracted.
with a split you just shovel the spores and mould around.
with an old fashioned air-conditioner you can replace the moist and infected air.
It has R-13 fiberglass under the plywood, but no ceiling and none on the roof.
I will treat for mold, but I doubt that I’ll tear down the existing plywood. I’m not sensitive to it. My current basement is full of it and I spent a ton of time down there.
For AC, I am bringing two nice window units with me. I shouldn’t need them in the house and will likely change out the windows. I was thinking of a propane fireplace or wall furnace but a mini split is an interesting idea.
Almost done packing. Movers arrive Monday morning!
If I wasn’t an old fart that doesn’t like climbing pull down stairs, I could use this finished loft area…
is there no place to squeeze in a permanent staircase?
i would hate to leave such a nice room to spiders and mice…
Not really. It’s not that nice. Perhaps 60" at the peak. I can’t fully stand up there.
I may upgrade the pull down stairs. I have modern aluminum stairs here that are much easier to climb.
We will need to use at least some of it for storage.
FOR RED TRAIN BOXES …
I am proud to say that I have never owned red box, thinking of LGB, but I guess the Accucraft boxes are red too, so yes!
I had to add RED to get to 20
That’s in the main house, right?
Totally impractical, but I can’t stop my mind from wandering to something like…
Good luck with remaining packing and next Monday, woo hoo!
Yes, the loft is above the two bedrooms. The attic above the kitchen & living room is unfinished and I plan to open it up at least over the living room to relieve the super low (6’ 8") ceiling. But first I need to address the crawlspace and perhaps add a supplemental heat source. Electric baseboard would be easy, but I’m concerned about plumbing in the crawlspace freezing. There is an abandoned oil furnace down there.
I think you finally hit FOG status! You dropped at least 2 nickles and didn’t realize that you even had change in your pocket that day!
Thats where the Lionel layout goes
And that would be full circle to where model trains began for me. We had a small unfinished attic area that you accessed through a cabinet. I built a single loop layout up there at about 12. Unfortunately, at 16 I sold all my 50’s vintage Lionel for gas money.
