"The Penguin"....Custom Russell Plow

So the CVRR has been looking for a snow plow that didn’t look like all the others, could hold a crew on a 24/7 basis with all the creature comforts in case of a 72 hr revolving shift. Unable to purchase such a plow the shops in Mechanicsburg have decided to build one. This plow was based on the old B&O X-26 and once the crew started building this plow to satisfy their company’s requirements they realized it looked like a “Penguin” and have dubbed the build as such! Below is a shot of the X-26 , may I note this will be the first rolling stock build for the CVRR shops>

Scanned this out of a book so not sure of the photo credit I want to first add that I started by taking the cabin off the Aristo track cleaner car and knocking the stakes out of the Aristo plow car. This turned out to be an interesting configuration but not what I’m after, very simple to do though.

With that said may I start a thread… building the “Penguin” … shops have about 8hrs into the build so far and need to add their own personal creativity into this project yet.

The great Father knowing about bheer and snow came in for inspection today after a few “Holy Waters”

Looks like you’re off to a good start, though that black macks it hard to tell. Definately has the flavor of the X-26. I like that roof line

If you don’t like “the Penguin” name, the top looking down picture looks like the “Spy vs Spy” from Mad Magazines. But 'the Penguin" fits it quite well. Looks like a great project.

Spy vs Spy…my favorite.

Now that looks kewl. Very unusual. Many, many moons ago GR ran plans for different car types and one of the plans was for a snowplow. Using the plans I built my first scratch-built project… a snow plow.

Nice work so far. You’re lucky to find a pic to help . I just winged it . It’s the same principle as yours . I’ve nicked named it the " Lead Sled". I ended up using a lot of lead. I should weigh it.

YA that’s a slab of lead, and there is one also behind the plow blade.

Then came the BEAST!!! I did find a pic when i was stuck with a way to finish.

It is ...read my post above his photo! :)

Ken,
I have those plans somewhere!

Sean,
I see you have a flanger on the Lead Sled…did you make that ?

Brian,

OK so do I give the “Penguin” a safety orange upper bill or leave it white. It needs some orange in it somewhere and I asked the wife and boy their thoughts but interested in yours as well.

Go with the orange.

I’d make it the same color as the plow. If you need orange on it that bad, paint the trim around the windows orange. Or have an orange stripe down the side.

Here is a link to some great plow pictures, but the X-26 was difficult to find. No offense guys, but pictures are enough for me, I’ll stay in Arizona…

That looks great.

Hi Dave,

You’r plow looks good, nice work.

Chuck

Looking good Dave -

I agree with Ken - Plow and ‘cover’ should be the same color. There are prototype examples out there with safety stripes if that’s your thing.

One thing to consider as the build progresses… To actually use the plow with snow, it needs a lot of weight. I’d suggest ball bearing wheels and a some way to add weight. I run the stock Aristo plow and fill the hopper and the area above the blade with 3/4" stone. Works good

I think unconventional paint scheme. Build is looking good.

Me too Dave …for now gonna use the Aristo plow but perhaps I’ll build one later that will more closely replicate the X26 plow. I’m actually having fun with this. Ken, you spotted the orange in the earlier post didn’t you …sneaky devil you! Jon R I’m working off the Aristo plow, the shell I’m making will be removeable so a brick can be tossed in for weight as I have in the past years. However the CVRR needs a “BATTERY” operated MOW geep 9(or an Aristo N&W high hood SD 45 if one is available for purchase  so the line can be cleared and then cleaned for operations. Kinda hoping for snow this year. The viaduct and deck truss are snow virgins and the “Penguin” would love to plow them! Have no snow shots of Lemo interchange blahh blahh blahh…My typical rant Ken!
