Is that Amtrak!!!

It only took me a little over 10 years but I finally changed the couplers on my 44’s to Kadee, so I had to take them out for a spin.

Summer is drawing to a close, but I pulled one more locomotive out of The Shop for service…fresh from rebuilding after a wreck, WV&K 120 I’m pretty sure the only Large Scale 4-8-0 in existence…

That loco didn’t look so big until you put it next to the K-27. It must weigh a ton!!

She just sits taller…she’s actually not as long and doesn’t weigh as much…although there is the wr\eight from a Connie and an Annie in the boiler…

I missed summer by one day, but I’m cheating and going to still call this Summer Running.

Local politicians have requested that the Deadwood & Black Hills Western retrieve a freight shipment of cows and pigs along with other supplies for the End of Summer Celebration. Here we see Number 21 rounding the curve after picking up a cattle car and box car filled with the celebration supplies. It seems they are sparing no expense this year.

img[img]
Here is 21 just passing over the Stagebarn Canyon Bridge

img[img]
Rounding the curve before rolling over Boxelder Creek Trestle

img[img]
This isn’t the best picture. But an overall of the area. Now back to our adventure

img[img]
Number 21 and her small freight train crossing Boxelder Creek Trestle.

img[img]
Made it across the trestle and now its time to battle the ruling grade up to Battle Mountain and past Snakebite Mine (the railroad’s biggest customer). However, with such a small train today #21 shouldn’t have a problem.

img[img]
#21 is laboring up the hill to the summit. It might be a small train but it still makes the little steamer work.

img[img]
The train running past the Smith and Sons Grist Mill.

img[img]
As the train passes the Grist Mill, The summit is reached and its a small downhill run into Deadwood. The citizens will be greatly appreciative for the needed supplies for the end of summer celebration.

img[img]
The freight has arrived and none too soon. An extra has been dispatched to pick up some dignitaries who wish to join in the celebration.

img[img]
The small extra is running down to the bottom of Battle Mountain to pick up passengers for the end of summer celebration in Deadwood. #25 is heading up the train today.

img[img]
#25 heading pass the Grist Mill on the way coasting downgrade.

img[img]
Here we catch up with #25 as she passes over Boxelder Creek Trestle.

img[img]
Passing over the trestle its a short grade and the extra will arrive at the station.

img[img]
This car was pressed into service so quickly that railroad employees didn’t have a chance to give her a proper wash.

There ya have it.

Jake you have done a great job on your layout
thank you for the pics.

Richard

What Richard said! I enjoyed the pictures & the story. Just one question; Is #25 waiting for a new number plate? I see she is numbered 346 on the front :]

I had plans of doing a final summer run video, but the HD camera I borrowed from work crapped out.

Nice pics one and all. And yes you have come a long way on your layout Jake.

It was such a beautiful day I had my own “end-of-summer” run, ( Sorry Bruce, this was a spur of the moment Ops session).

Ken, do you think you could show some better pictures of that carrying case?

Sorry Jake, I don’t know how I missed this on the first go-round.

1/2" plywood, glued, screwed and clamped together, 2 groves cut into the bottom and some foam padding added. I gotta do something about the ramp, it keeps moving on me when I drive the engine outa the carrier.

Yep, you noticed it…I figured someone would. That locomotive is originally an Accucraft #346. I painted the boiler and then stalled on it. I have the parts now to change everything over and decal the loco but other projects have delayed me doing it.
