The offical snow thread

I really like your yellow plow CZ. Sean your rotary works very well. I tried mine yesterday but I had too much wheel slippage on ice and spotty dirty track. I thought I could do something today but…
we got dumped on here in Brewster on the Cape. It drifted a bit but I measured 14"s .

The guys were sent out this morning and did a good job but overall they hardly put a dent in the drifts.
They continued to work into the afternoon and dug out the rotary NOW if they could only find a engine to push it.
Shortly after this photo was taken Management realised the futility AND the overtime they would be paying so they put a stop to the digging out.

I hope we get some snow down here in Mississippi this winter. The last time I got to run in snow was 2 years ago.

I tried to run the plow yesterday. About 3 inches of very fine and very cold wind blown snow. With a little help from a hand plow I made it up Indian Hill to Pine Summit, but had to give up because the fine snow had packed in around the wheels and traction motors causing the loco to completely loose traction even on level track.

This morning it’s over 50 with forecast of temps in single digits overnight. I finished clearing the line with the hand plow so that the slush that remained wouldn’t ice over the rail.

No pictures. Was too busy just trying tho keep the train moving.

Yesterdays freezing rain melted but now Im dealing with water all over and snow cover that is waterlogged. With temps going below freezing later on and a high of 4 degrees tomorrow everything is going to be rock solid ugh… I did use the hand plow and cleared the line. Hopefully the temps rise for the weekend.

Today we had mid 50’s with rain/drizzle on and off all day! No snow on layout but we are in for a deep freeze tonight! Openings for future photo ops!!

Sean, its on its way just started snowing here about half hour ago, everything’s covered again:(

Hey, send some of the WHITE stuff our way we’ve only seen 6" so far this year.

Reading about the very, very low temperatures in most of the United States at present, 13F in Milwaukee today, I wonder if a new thread should be started called The Offficial Ice Thread. aaaaaargh!

The other side of the coin is that the polar vortex over the USA is causing heavy rains, severe gales and up to 30ft. high waves to hit western shores of the UK causing serious damage. Whilst damage is being done to homes and seaside structures these pics from the BBC show how devastating some of the waves are.

Compare the pics. Some large chunks of real estate have just been washed away!!

It’s relatively simple to deal with the cold; not so much the damage caused by wind and waves. I’m sure your coastal dwellers would much rather have the cold.

It was 4F when I started the car this morning at 7:30A. They are forecasting a mild weekend, possibly in the 50’s. No snow in the short-term outlook.

-5F here and the high went to 3F

Thanks, Chuck. You had to ask. We finally got some. It covered the ice. My lovely bride forgot where the ice was because it was covered in 6 inches of snow and when she got out of the car to close the gate, slipped on two inches of ice, fell on her outstretched hand, and broke her wrist.

I’m not gonna blame Rooster for this, I’m gonna blame you.

I am very sorry to hear of your wifes injury Steve. I hope it is not too painful.

I guess that makes you ‘head cook and bottle washer’ again but I doubt it will be the first time you have had to fill that position.

She has my sympathy. I’ve been through that. That had to be the worst pain I ever felt.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. Yeah, she is in a lot of pain, especially when the pain pills wear off.

Its a small, non-displaced fracture, and hopefully does not involve the navicular bone, though I have my suspicions, as that is where she is the most tender. The images show that bone to be intact, but often a fracture of that bone won’t show up for three week, or more.

She works from home, so that’s a good thing. She is in her office, but I’m not sure just how productive she is, today.

I redid this on Adobe Elements 12. First time I’ve used it since I got it.

You’re supposed to be inside, Ken.

First, we find pictures of Ken without a hat, now he posts pictures of running trains (OK, a motor car) in the snow. The end is near.

Maybe he was left outside too long in the cold and doesn’t know what he is doing anymore

I wasn’t out there long, that’s fer sure…20 minutes and my hands were frostbit…

Ken, Great video Thanks.
