Large Scale Central

"The General" 4-4-0 (1/24 scale layout.)

This layout will be contained in a box,yes a locked cedar box and will be displayed only at Christmas or other special family occasions. It will be my gift to my family past, present and future.

Why so special ? Well it has been my experience that no matter how nice a layout/diorama is after a while it just becomes part of the furniture.Nobody really sees it anymore except guests or visitors. However, on the other hand ,only seeing something every once in a while will help bring fresh( if not new eyes) to an old piece. Also I don’t want to encase it in a tomb like structure, even of glass, but I wish to have it open to natural light, but without the dust, for those who may want to take pictures.

As public as my other stuff will be this will be only for private family or personal viewing. Why do it this way ? Simply I would like something that I made survive for a while after I am gone to the “Happy Hunting Ground” as a gift to my children and the young at heart.I have heard to many stories about how Grandpa Fred’s or Uncle Phil’s layout ended up in the garbage shortly after his death.Too big,no room, tired of looking at it sit there gathering dust etc…etc…

I know you say nothing survives forever ! No one knows that better than I and besides when I am gone who really gives a *** ? I surely won’t ! but you know somehow I do and I don’t mind admitting it.Ego you say ?well artists usually do have some of that it is true,Why else would we do what we do ?

[/url] This is approximately where I am with the General right now.

The general was 5’ gauge in 1/24 that’s 2-1/2"… so are you handlaying track as well, or fudging her to 42" gauge? Also, are you doing her as she actually looked in 1862, or one of the later rebuilds?

You may have noticed that I made no mention of motorizing the locomotive for this layout which is true.No I am not chickening out but have come to realize that in keeping with my original KISS principal this complication is probably not worthy of consideration after all.To run a locomotive down a few feet of straight track really adds nothing to what has already been planned,in fact any movement at all would just destroy the mood that I am trying to create.Better to leave the locomotive just idling at the station.

With no disrespect intended to John, his posting threads tend to be narratives and he generally does not respond to questions. He bulk downloads his material to various fora and possibly does not even read the postings on each forum. His intent seems to be just to put the information out there on the web. He undoubtedly is a modeller of great skill as his numerous exhibition pieces/dioramas have demonstrated.

I still have questions :stuck_out_tongue:
Actually I was hoping, since he was building a fantastic little diorama, that he was doing her as she actually looked during the Andrews raid. From the pics, it seems he’s just prettying up the kit. It will be really nice… for 1901 or so.

Such a simple solution I don’t know why I never thought of it before.A RR station has been built over a coach sitting on a sideline track (spur line?)using whatever materials happened to be at hand. Why ? who knows !, but that is not what is important to our story.
To say the least the station is very crudely built of old weathered siding with RR ties for a platform. It could have been built on one of Hollywood’s backlots expressly for this purpose or it could have been just a found location.

John -

Thanks for posting your build log. This will be interesting. One request if you might; Us old farts don’ see so well and those tiny pictures don’t show any detail. We’re quite happy with pictures 640 or even 800 pixels wide. You don’t need to bother with the [IMG] tags either. LSC will automatically recognize most standard format pictures.

I sent you a message John…did you receive it ?

Hi Tim ! I read and respond to any questions asked of me usually ASAP.Yes,I post something just about every day but sometimes miss others postings on a preceding page.Yes I post to many fora as you have noted but that is my personal choice to do so as I enjoy sharing my stuff with others. It is fun but it does take up a lot of my time valuable building time to do so. Thank you for your kind words regarding my skill level and yes I am very fortunate to have a home or two for my work. Cheers! John.

Welcome John,

You found the right place!

On that layout, how much space do you have?
Hi ! not a lot really but it should fit on a shelf if not too wide.

Thank you all for your kind welcome ! Cheers! John.

Oh ! I thought the IMG tags would open the image in my photobucket directly instead of me resizing everything.

Now that you mention that, the thumbnails can be clicked and lead to the full size image on Photobucket. I didn't think to try that until you mentioned it. Thanks for the clue :D You still do not need the [IMG] tags though.

That’s a good-looking engine! They size-up just fine.
