I was wondering has anyone here had a problem with allergies and super glue ? I have had some problems in the past with the fumes but lately it seems to be getting worse.I am very careful about exiting the fumes outdoors but just handling the stuff now seems to be a problem and of course there is always some fume residue lurking around.I have been using it for years but lately the symptoms seem to be getting more troublesome with even some skin reactions involved.Filters and masks don’t work either.

I love my hobby but I don’t want to croak because of it.

Is there a good substitute for ca ? something that sets up quickly but is not too toxic ?

I stick with Five Minute Epoxy because I’m a little shaky and the first think I would do is glue myself to the workbench!

After using epoxy of any type over a period of time, I begin to get a numbness in my upper lip and usually quit working with it for awhile at that time. It goes away and things are fine, or back to normal, or back to the way I was before I started. All is questionable.

Have you tried the odorless CA? I had some coughing issues when I used regular CA; not when I was using it, but when I wanted to sleep - couldn’t even sleep at night. Switched to the odorless and haven’t had any problems since.

Thanks guys !

You know this is actually a great little kit but it did test my patience at times. Most of the problems are with the instructions and the hard to read identification #'s of the parts on their sprues. In a kit of this size and complexity I wonder how many ever actually got finished.I know mine had been started years ago by someone else and I picked it up for the price of the postage. If the manufacturers had put a little more money into the actual kit and less in marketing a nice box ,it would have been money well spent. It makes me wonder how many potential modelers have lost their interest in building due to this problem.I know that if I hadn’t of had lots of prior experience mine would probably be still in the box in the cupboard too.

Very nice. Always liked the General. Just don’t leave it in the sun or a very warm place. It will warp…etc. Have seen several of this kit that that has happened to.

John I built this kit years ago when it was first release. This kit is easy, you want something that will drive you mad pick up a Revell Ed “Big. Daddy” Roth “Mysterion” car kit. One of the most frustrating kits I ever built. Reminded me why I stopped kit building …then I remembered some of the vacu-form kits of old. Those would drive you to drink.

I sit here in stunned amazement that you are using a physical adhesive, rather than a liquid solvent such has that made by Revell for styrene kit assembly. Same stuff used for putting together Evergreen models, plastruct models, and any other plastic model since the middle sixties.

Over here it is called MEKPAK, or MEK [Methyl Ethyl Ketone], and is a colourless but highly volatile fluid about the same viscosity as lighter fuel. You put the two parts together, dip a brush in this stuff, and touch it to the area of the join. It slurps right in there by capillary action, and melts the plastic at the point of conatact, making a seamless and invisible weld.

When I was younger we used to use chloroform - same deal with the join. Don’t ask me where it came from though…

Available at most hobby stores…

Thank you Noel for the heads up.You have me a little worried about the warping problem ,have you any more info on this or how it can be avoided. Were they in glass cases in the sun? or just left outside ? I have already added a lot of wood to the model and could incorporate more as supports if required.

Maybe it was because it was my first locomotive kit.It should get better with time.

Hi tac ! I guess it is a hold over from my wood kit building days.
