The First Big Storm

Well, it’s that time of year. Time to make French Toast, you know, make sure you have plenty of eggs, milk and bread. Yes, the weather men are making their money now. Doesn’t matter if they are right or wrong they are putting everyone in a frenzy. Oh, its going to be a big one folks, unless it misses us. It was 66 degrees today and tomorrow is going to be warmer. But tomorrow night and into Thursday, we could be in real trouble. Whatever. Hell, I could die by then. I love to watch the snow come down, so I hope we have some. Ice storms are fun, the pretty sounds and the crsytal like covering on the trees, if the power stays on and then its an adventure if it doesn’t. Does anyone want to just call it quits today so you don’t have to face the unknown? Keep that way of thinking up and you to could be a weatherman. Guess I’ll clean up the pond tomorrow and change the pump over to winter running. Need to do it anyway. Oh the pressures of life, why can’t we all just be vegetables? Enjoy! Life is still going to happen tomorrow. Its up to you as to whether or not you participate.

I’m digging in in Chicago!

Ric,

Spoken like one of those that don’t have to go out and rescue the idiots!! I envy you that joy. It disapearred from me long ago. Maybe when I retire…

We had our first heavy rain of the season on Monday, over half an inch. (Yeah, it doesn’t sound like much but for San Diego that’s considered a lot.) I was out in the high desert getting more rocks for the layout, only got some occasional mist and a lot of very cold wind. Didn’t hit much rain until I got back into town.

The weather channel had screwed up again, only predicting a slight chance of showers, so I hadn’t taken any precautions for the loose soil on the unfinished area of the layout. Much of it ended up on the gravel walkway below. Not a big problem though and easily fixed. All the finished and partly-finished areas held up just fine.

Two weeks ago we got hit with a day of drizzle, completely unpredicted by the weather channel. I don’t know how accurate they are in other parts of the country but around here they seem to be wrong a great deal of the time. Anyway, on that day we discovered a serious leak in the roof, which had water running down into the walls of the living room and a former bedroom (now storage area). Ugh. Fortunately we got it fixed before the damage was too severe.

Torby says he’s digging in…well, here we are digging out…:frowning: First storm has come and gone. Maybe there won’t be a second…fat chance!

we got our first rain this weekend, temps down into the 30’s tonight…it was in the 80’s just two weekends ago…

We have to brave it everyday. I’m just not that crazy about French toast.

Well , you chaps seem to have a lot of weather around you .
The only thing of note lately here with weather was a mini tornado hit a small part of a small town in Wales . Very unusual in the UK .
We are actually very lucky with our climate , we do not get the dangerous extremes as in the USA . Just miserable middling stuff .
The 2 inches of snow we get in the south brings everything to a slithering stop (i.e. "Oh dear , I can’t get to work ")

Mike, we do get all kinds of weather. But I have to say that overall…barring major desasters, that day after day after day of drizzly rain is what I hate the worst…and we get a lot of it here. :frowning: We’re now in that time of year where it will be 3 months before we have 2 sunny days in a row. By the first of March I’ll have cabin fever so bad I’ll want to scream…:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Subzero here. Snow all over everything. Pretty typical.

Good day to stay indoors and play in the shop!

Dawg

They say possible T Storms, but I don’t see any snow in the forcast now.

We had a great day yesterday at 70 degrees. Got all the outside jobs done, including putting pond in “Winter Mode”. Changed oil and got plow and chains on lawnmower. Brought railroad buildings in and made plans for “Winter Work” on railroad stuff. Raining now and temp at 6 am is 43 degrees and dropping. Ice and snow forecasted for today and buddy in KC already reporting they have ice and snow. Looks like Marty probably got nailed pretty good. Now this is not “Warren or TOC style snow and ice”, but our news people have 15 minute updates of who is going to get wet and iced next. Gives a great anticipation to a rather normal winter event and sure does mess up a good TV or radio program. Yes, bread, milk and eggs are becoiming in short supply at the grocery store and you can hear the frying pans and grills beginning to sizzle through out the area as maple syrup wafts through the air. Pretty soon we will here terrible versions of “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” probably in rap instead of by “ole Bing”. And life continues, much to the dismay of our weather people.

Yup.

Looking at the national weather map this morning it looks like you should be in the thick of it now. And if they have the predictions right we should get hit with the same storm up and down the East coast.

I like your outlook. I grew up near Buffalo, NY. Winter storms don’t bother me at all, I rather enjoy them. I suppose I should buy some gas for the generator just in case we have a long power outage - don’t want the frozen food to thaw. For heat I have a propane fireplace in the basement and a wood burner upstairs. Unlikely we’d ever freeze so long as there is fuel. With a a propane grill and plenty of NY Strips in the freezer there’ll be no French Toast around here

Hunker down and enjoy the show.

Now they say 6 to 12 inches.

Funny, in all the years (decades) I’ve been driving in all types of weather in all sorts of states, I cannot recall ever having a major thunderstorm in a snowstorm.
I mean, this was close, as in flash-bang.

Hit two airplanes in the air at SeaTac as I was trying to get into town.

Weird stuff.

1600 Report - current temp 34 degrees - rained all day - St. Louis Airport just reported that it is closed, but that is almost 70 miles away. So far life continues, there is a “French toast haze over the whole town”. (Please make your own blizzard sounds while reading this report.)

It’s all white outside. It’s cold – 18 degrees – and we won’t see 2 days in a row of sunshine for at least 3 months…:frowning: It’s the latter that get’s me down so much. Talk about cabin fever! TOC, those thunderstorms were meant for Spokane. We do get them at times during our snowstorms.

12/01/06 - 0600 - Temp 30 degrees - wind 22 mph from west - We had an ice storm last night with lots of trees and all covered with ice, but temp stayed around 34 degrees so surface didn’t freeze. Snow is still predicted, but its getting close to Winter, so that doesn’t seem to strange. We had some power outages last night and that eventually caused me to quit using the bandsaw. I must say, that became a little unnerving. Power eventually stayed off for about 45 minutes. Smells of French toast was being blown away by high winds. After 15 minutes of local panic during power outage, as other kerosene lamps and portable scanner and radio were found, “Bride” resorted to self-sacrifice of trying to eat all the ice cream in the house before it melted. She stated, “we all have to make some sacrifices during emergency times”. Got a reassuring phone call from Father Fred for moral support. He stated he was warm by the fire, but nude moon dances are being temporarily postponed in the northern territory. With that news, cold weather in this part of the World may continue for many months.

Didn’t miss anything here! My little Baretta took a few minutes getting through the snowdrift in the motel parking lot. After that, snow was no trouble, but the traffic was awful. Took 2 hours to go 3 miles.

I’m actually looking forward to that cold air mass. The rain started here as a drizzle today, but it’s 65 and extremely humid. My Boss refuses to use AC after thanksgiving, so we are sucking wet air into the building with the recirc system. It’s gawd awful in here today. I have some comp time coming from a short lunch and late night yesterday, so I’ll enjoy AC in the car and go railfanning for a few hours

They say it won’t snow here, but supposed to be very cold tomorrow - something like a 35 degree drop from today’s high.

Winter wonderland is playing on the muzak right now. Hard to get the Christmas spirit in a sauna bath :frowning:
