Large Scale Central

The CVRR is getting a new deck truss bridge

She is made from 1/2" box steel and 3/16" round stock fully welded and ground on the outside and tacked on the inside. The span is 9.5 feet, 12" high by 10" wide. I need to do the decking for it yet but other than that she’s ready for the line. It’s off about 1/8" square which is satisfactory for me considering the span and the heat of the welds does tend to warp things. I have about 20hrs in it so that’s enough for me. If I decide I want to add more I can do such later(like gussets and railings etc). I actually stood and walked on it …incredibly strong! I’m not real happy with the piers but it is what it is. I kinda whipped them out on a tight schedule this past Saturday. But in looking at steel truss pictures and downing a lot of beer in the process, the rule of thumb I found is pretty much anything goes as long as it’s supported? I’m no engineer and I built this free handed on a nice old flat steel door at my garage. So may I present the soon to be newest addition to my RR. Enjoy

Looks great David. Can’t wait to see it on the layout.

I must say, I like the bridge.
But I need the garage

Nice square fabricating by the looks of the through shot. Nice!

I told you my wife said I was ADHD what ever that is?

I forgot to mention “sorry for the trash cans” in the pictures

Dave - looks great. nice having a large work area. I guess your a car mechanic as well

Nice job. Though it does look like it might be blocking that door.

When does it go on the layout?

Looks good. Should go well with the viaduct.

Aren’t you glad now that Andy didn’t buy that MIG welder? …

I think he bought a new one, that’s why he was pushing the used one so hard

David, A great looking bridge… when will it make a position on your layout???

Ken, he said he got a new one… However, if I had his work garage, then I would have bought his mig welder…

Of course, i’m the culprit for not buying it, but it was never brought to York for me… It was brought for someone else…

I did buy a new welder but I used the old one to spite Andy…just kidding.
Not sure when it’s going on the layout with Easter this weekend and my boys opening day of baseball next week not sure…will add more pics when installed.

Your the culprit for everything the way I understand it! Besides my garage isn’t as big as you think it’s actually rather small and it’s not my workshop either. Welding and a wooden workshop don’t go well together.

Well, just don’t try to weld the wood… hehehe

and the Import Emporium is a nice building… the driveways a bit rough, but it’s a nice building…

Andy,
Yes the parking lot needs re-paved however I’m waiting for warmer temps and also hoping for an oil spill at the soon to be J&B RR oil platform (next to Salmons Produce). My crew will dispatch south to the site headed with a Chessie unit and 55’ tankers in tow pushed across the grades by a CVRR GP38(ex Lehigh Valley unit). We will clean up the mess, return north and mix the spill with shale/limestone chips then spread the mixture on the CVRR.
Instant freakin’ parking lot baby!
We need a picture of Rics buggy with MU’ed diesel’s yanking an Auto Rack hammering down the buggy’s back door (ditch lights and all)
Now that’s funny in my mind…the buggy must have the chickens strapped to the roof though!!!
Bye the way the 1:24 Saab 900 was a gift from Terry De whatever he is these days…I thank him many times over for something so simple but very treasured!

You guys are the best!
Andy …if you had relations with a very, very, very hot Playboy Model in the late 60’s I could be your son??? I hope I don’t have to call you dad!!!
I raise my glass to all and for Fred’s sake “Go to Chat”

lol  David

So I got the bridge set but not sure if I like it’s position. I feel I need “MORE” bridges…I believe i want to center this one in the garden and add deck girders to the north and south of it. Either way it is set for now and supporting the heavy’s over the span . Yes I need to weather my rolling stock but that is a winter project and trackwork/ infastructure is the most important thing currently.

If you run your trains enough, the weathering will take care of itself.
The bridges look great.
Ralph

Well, Dave all you need now is a model of this one…

looking good. Is that the viaduct just past the retaining wall?
