Quit screwing around wasting water and get back to work finishing that stream!
A undershot wheel is more efficient because the bottom of the wheel is going
in the same direction as the water in the stream, that is what my research has
shown when I was looking for ideas on wheel design.
The stream is my wife’s responsibility, she volunteered.
Well, I’ve just learned something - I always had the overshot image in my head too.
Great build, thanks for posting Mark. Looking forward to the final installation.
Cheers

I’ve only seen undershot wheels having the current being in a channel beneath the wheel.
But heck this makes sense, using the backside blades like that.
Learning something new every day…
Oh, boy, a cliffhanger!
This started out as a kind of joke between wife and I and our three daughters. They think we are crazy. It is now going to be a reality. We built the wall for the RR two years ago and are now taking it down and moving it over to the ditch on the left for more room for the RR. Block party Saturday will see how many takers we have.
The inevitability of RR ownership, More is always less than you wind up needing
Progress. I am trying to get the first row down before Saturday when the help shows up. That way all we have to do is stack blocks. The first row has to be level and it takes the most time.
Lot of progress today thanks to our daughter and her husband. We moved a lot of blocks and dirt. Now we have to order more blocks.
Are you planning to have a dip so you can put in a trestle (as Cliff how to make one )
I have a trestle and no I will not be adding another one. The blocks will be higher after we get more.
Wow Mark, that’s such an amazing wall. It must be so satisfying to lay those blocks, and create your new spaces, boundaries and volumes. Nice work.
The hard part is getting the first row in as it has to be level front to back and side to side and match the height of it’s neighbor once that is done it don’t take long to build a wall. Yes it is satisfying to get that much done. Vary thankful for a daughter and son in law that is not afraid of manual labor .
Drew our track layout for all to see what we are adding. The black is the original, red is what we added in the spring and the blue is what we are doing now. Called about blocks today to finish the wall and their delivery truck is broke down. Waiting for a phone call for their plan B.
Daughter and her husband come over today and helped with the wall. Its all done still needs more gravel. The steps are almost done, working on the last one. There will be landscaping along the steps and some along the wall leaving room for spectating.
Gorgeous work, Mark. How many months have you put into this wall and stair again?
I just checked my pictures on my phone and the first picture was August 27, still more to go. Thanks for complement, I enjoy doing that kind of stuff just wish the blocks didn’t weigh 75 pounds.
OK Mark,
So 0.3 months for all that. Nice work, Speedy Gonzales!
75 lbs, ok I guess you got the serious blocks. I’ve just been working with the little 12" wide wall blocks. Yours look simply AMAZING. Love the variegated coloration. Really nice touch with using the same blocks as risers on the steps, with flagstone as infill.
I used all natural rock (dug up from my property) for my first level, but that was insanely difficult, and there’s no more natural rock. If I get to my second level, it’ll be with similar methods as yours.
Soldier on,
Cliff
Thanks. I am retired so have more time for such things and we also have a son in law that really likes to help and he is a worker. All the stone is from stone walls on our property thankfully I have a tractor to move the bigger ones, some are 3-4 feet across and 2-4 inches thick.
