The Bachmann "Emily" Sterling Single...upgrades

… Did anyone ever move on the holes for the splasher?

I got the drawings from Jerry and I said I would try to do a CAD drawing so that Alan (G.A.L.) could cut some inserts in styrene. Unfortunately, it is unlikely I will get to it any time soon due to other commitments and the lack of a loco to evaluate how it would fit!

Alan could probably do it without me if he could borow a loco.

Anyone start on their Emily yet? I have a couple of projects to go before I’ll get to it.

Considering getting one myself so interested in what others have done too

Anyone moved forward and got any pics? Interested to see where this goes.

I notice that the advertisement for this set has appeared in the UK’s #1 GR magazine as tho’ it was the idea of the provider, instead of an idea by an interested modeller. If we had waited for the company concerned to get off their butts, we’d still be waiting now, i reckon.

tac, ig, ken the GFT & The Honourless Prophet Boys

I got the parts Tac, thanks to your info. Have not gotten to the project yet, been hoping someone else would do it first and post pix to save my brain any work, it’s about worn out!

I finally got started on this. I cut a piece of plastic to fill the front boiler hole and used some Bondo spot putty to smooth it out.

On the cab, I cut the piece off that left no room for a floor and made a floor, saving the four screw holes. I glued the backhead piece to the front of the the cab, where it should be.

I scaled/printed a drawing of the splash holes, I plan to cut them out. You also have to cut the black piece behind the green outside piece.

1000% better looking already

I got a few more parts from Ozark to add to the ones I got from the UK. Seems those he sent are almost for another UK loco. So I’ll use some and add the Ozarks, won’t be 100% accurate but that’s the way it goes I guess.

I sanded off the boiler bands and the molded ‘hand rail’. Used a Micro Mark belt sander. Then covered it with Nashua brand metal duct tape.

The backhead part from the UK is not accurate at all for #1, but I used the basic part anyway and added some Ozark castings. Gauges will go on once I get the cab painted.

I ordered the little jigsaw from Micro Mark to cut the holes in the splashers, thought that might help.

Kewl!

Jerryy, I won’t allow my daughter to see this thread…she loves Emily (Great work BTW)

Show your daughter, by all means. Explain that Emily wanted “Cosmetic surgery”…in thirty years, your daughter will want it too…maybe sooner…it’s the trend…!!

A friend of mine, with a C&C mill is going to make me some metal rods to replace the plastic ones. Might be awhile though. Guess I should get on cutting the holes. I got the Micro Mark jigsaw just for that. Have used it on some other stuff and it works great.

I used some white transfer paper to trace off the wheel cotours. Then traced over it with a black marker. I drilled holes on the top and bottom and used the Micro Mark jigsaw. Some filing/sanding has it about finished off.

An inner black area has to be cut out also, I took most of it out, not doing just the holes. I used a white Stabilo pencil to mark where to cut, tracing through the cut piece.

All cut out. Wheel shows up pretty good. Due to EMILY’s brown stripe being level(unlike the Stirling Single) it looks like I may cut out another hole, but still thinking that over. Anyone have thoughts on that? Looking at the pictures of the Stirling, there was that solid piece like that, so I’ll probably leave it.

Thanks Joe!

Had hoped to hear from someone else doing this, been a lot of lookers at these posts. I should be getting the metal rods soon from my buddy that has a C&C mill. Anybody else want some, not sure what he’s charging.

Ted sent me info that Back To Bay 6 in the UK has some pieces to help on an Emily conversion. More accurate parts than I got from the other outfit. Scroll down the page, there are some other parts, including interior seats for the coaches.

Jerry,

If you follow that Back2Bay6 link to Smallbrook Studios (who made the parts,) there are a bunch of photos of a converted “Emily”. Not as elaborate as yours, perhaps, but pretty!

(Weird stuff going on - better report to Bob elsewhere.)

Interesting - they provide an overlay for the splasher, and leave the inside black. More pictures at
