The Bachmann "Emily" Sterling Single...upgrades

Bit more done to the Stirling. Shortened the black braces, they are too long and drilled a hole in them. Used Ozark 1/2" bolt heads around the edges and 3/4" ones on the upright brace. Noticed not much grease on the gears, so if you are running your Emily quite a bit you might want to lube it good.

Stirling Front

The front pieces pull out, so that simplifies work some.

That’s looking good, Jerry. More, please.

Not sure anyone else is modifying one, but people seem to look at this.

I modified the tender some, using my own ideas, could not find any pix of this area on the Stirling. On the Emily it just goes straight across, so I cut in for the coal loader some. Made the top removable to get to battery/rc someday. Using some metal duct tape embossed with rivet patterns.

That look superb Jerry. Lovely workmanship.

This is just one of very many web sites, mainly models, of this GN loco.

Don’t know much about them Jerry as I am a GWR guy.

I got the Emily conversion parts from back2bay6 (Under the Thomas tab) , or you can get them direct from www.smallbrookstudios.co.uk Not sure they are set up for Paypal or not. Good castings, boiler front has an extension on the back that slides into the hole in front. I’ll be removing the metal one I got from the vendor at the beginning of these posts, didn’t really fit Emily at all.

The splashers should be worth the price alone - save you a ton of work. You can cut out behind them if you want to ‘open’ look. My UK sister-in-law has asked what I want for my birthday . . .

I have bought a couple of accessory items from the BacktoBay6 guy at a local show. He is a good trader but never sold new Aristo so he didn’t benefit my my many Aristo purchases.

I will be buying very little, if anything, in future as I have more than enough. I might be tempted by one or two road names which were made in the past.

I got some of the parts on. Well cast and didn’t need much cleanup. I modified the holes I had cut before, did not quite line up with the parts. I like seeing the wheel through the splashers. Should look neat when running. Getting a metal rod made by a buddy.

splashers one

Side view shows the wheel through the splasher holes. Cab roof was trimmed to be straight across as Stirling #1 had. THey didn’t give much shelter to their crews!

Pardon my ignorance …why do they call them “splashers” is that like British terminology for fenders ? Technically as I see it the side panel with the cutouts is more of a decorative piece than a functional one. I would call them skirts personally.

BTW the mods are looking good Jerry

Thanks David. From what I read, they called them splashers. I’m guessing they were supposed to cut down on splashing from the big driver? Later on, they filled them in, so I suppose the holes were not a good idea! I like the way it looks, being able to see the wheel turn behind them.

Yes. “Splashers” is the correct term for covers over the wheels on a steam engine - or any other machine like it. Cars have ‘wings’ unless they are cycle-car type fenders like a Morgan, where they are called ‘splashers’.

Keep it up Jerry!

Made some progress on the tender. Cut into the front for the fireman. Put bolts in the rear and ‘riveted’ the metal with metal duct tape and a pounce wheel. Brown spot is the spray can cap that seals up the back of the speaker. Will be room in the tender for the sound card and Rail Boss 4 Rx. Batteries will go in a coach behind.

A friend of mine with a mill made metal rods for my Stirling Single. I still need to pick them up and try them out. They sure look good!

I left the screw holes and braces on the bottom of the cab when I removed the ‘Emily’ backhead that filled the whole cab.

Here are the rods installed. He plans to mold/cast them out of metal and do cross heads also, once I get it to him for measurements. Note the wheel you can see through the splashers. Let me know if you may want a set of rods, he is still working on the price.

Jerry,

Yes I would like a set of rods for the
Stirling Single.

Long time no talk.

Noel

Jerry,

I’d like a set as well.

How’s that 6" Atlas lathe treating you??

Okay Mike, I’ll add your name to the list.

I seldom do anything with the lathe, no big projects. Little here and there.
