Terry's build challenge for 2013

My car kit arrived from Dave on saturday. I opened it this morning. Wonderful kit by the way. I was considering making it the standard gon as sent but then realized that my crane is going to need a carriage car. Game on… Here’s the car under all the weights drying.

Thanks again for the kit Dave, it’s a really nice model. Terry

I think we have a new game: Identify the weights Over in Bruces thread Pete Thornton identified an older Bachmann 10 Wheeler weight. Here I see a Bachmann side tank Porter weight

Ah, but it’s the Spectrum Porter weight. I have several Big Hauler Porters and their weights are different. They don’t have weights that extend into the side tanks.

Joe,

I have seen the innards of a couple of Bachmann’s K27s, and have seen different weight configurations there as well. At least those mentioned have an ‘afterlife’. The K27 weights I have seen are just stacks of about 16ga sheet metal.

Bob C.

In case anybody’s wondering, I use old York barbell 2.5 and 5 lb. weights from an old barbell set. Gave the rest of the set to my nephew…

If you weren’t wondering, then disregard this…

Watching and cheering here…

The two on the left bottom are LGB from a sumpter valley mallet loco and tender. The left top is an aristo from I think an FA. The center top is a side tank porter. The bottom is from the K-27 tender. Top right is an lgb thats been cut. and bottom right are add ons pulled from a USA loco. The Bachmann 0-4-0 still pulls pretty well without the big weight in it!

Terry

I use the 1972 Encyclopaedia Brittanica.

I haven’t built built in awhile and this is fun!! Terry

It IS fun, isn’t it? Glad ya had a good day, Kiddo.

That is looking real good. I like the coupler lift levers.

Tom

So… What ya gona do with all the left over pieces of wood from the gon. part? Parts bins, storage for crane stuff?

Dave, I’ll use most everything by the time i’m done. It’s a really nice kit thankyou again!

Terry

I’m not worried about left overs, I really don’t know what kind of stuff would go on a tender for a crane!

Firewood, guys, firewood!:stuck_out_tongue:

No way John, not firewood. Dave cut up some really nice wood for us kit recipients and I will also have left overs since I’m not using the wood to build the sides but I will use it on future projects. It is too nice to burn.
Nice lift levers Terry

Was kidding, Todd, really! In reality I’d save any leftovers. But a crane tender was mentioned a couple of posts back, and around the old Late and Slow here, crews are always scrounging fuel for their woodburners, so when they see wood, that’s the first thing they think of. We have to keep a careful watch or they’ll toss any useful wood lying around the shop into their tenders!

I went on line to see some pics of “Boom” cars, and tenders for wrecking cranes and pile drivers, and I found next to nothing. I assume that if the crane was steam, then there would need to be some fuel, Oil tank, or coal for extended run time, and a aux water supply of some type. Am I wrong on this, My thinking was along the line of a rotary plow and it’s tender. Or were they just spacer flats for the boom to rest on?

Try this, Dave
