There aren’t alot of pictures of carriage cars because they aren’t “cool” like the cranes were. The one that Ken posted is common for a heavy wrecking crane. In view it has extra trucks to put under damaged cars. The shed may have rigging or tools needed for the crew. some cars had a carriage to support the boom, others did not and the crane always carried it’s boom suspended. They would also carry rail, ties and such to make a temporary track to set cars or a locomotive on or to fix damaged sections of track. typically if they needed alot of rail they would bring dedicated cars of rail. They would also carry cribbing if the crane had outriggers. Some steam cranes had tenders to carry water and fuel, others relied on a loco to bring it to them.
My crane is a backwoods logging crane. So it should have all sorts of beat up crap on it…

I don’t have an answer to this question, Dave - at least not yet - but I’m sitting here googling “steam crane” and I’m having a really good time. Try this on for size:

Thanks Ken… I had gone to that site… there are only a couple of pics that show what I think is it’s own tender (for water and Coal/oil)…
Does any one know if the “Tender” option was the way that these were used for extended run times? Or were there water tanks and coal bins self contained within the Dog House? The D&RG derrick had to be powered from a engine, which makes these questions mute, as it had no boiler of it’s own.

That all sounds about right. Up to now I’ve always taken the term “crane tender” to mean a boom car, often loaded as Terry says. The notion that fuel and water could be taken from the loco also makes good sense. It would be interesting to determine just what’s sitting on the track just to the left of the N&W crane in Ken’s second picture up there… I’m thinking it might be the front end of a beat up old loco tender…(?) ideas ?
Dave: Seems to me that putting all that weight in the doghouse just wouldn’t have been an option. It has to be able to turn, and there’s machinery in there.

for a pic of the Nevada Northern Crane in action. There may be a small amount of fuel in there next to the boiler after all. You can visit this place and snoop around and ask questions pretty much to your heart’s content.

Found some answers… Some did have a dedicated tender, and others didn’t.

This UP work horse did… Vandy tender non the less…
That UP crane is a big ole girl. Most likely a 60 ton and probly a locomotive crane as well that’s why it would have a tender like that.
Somewhere I have an old picture of the Nickel pPlate Road’s wreck train in Conneaut, Ohio. It was kept by the round house hooked into the main boiler to keep it hot. When it was needed they would call in it’s crew of very specialized workers and go. All of it’s tools were off limits so it was fully stocked when needed.
Terry
Did it have it’s own tender?
In the photo I have one is not shown, only the boom car and the destroyed train it is moving.

Today’s work. Not alot done mostly laying out parts for ideas. I’ve been spending most of my time with my son working on his pinewood derby car for scouts.
