Ten wheeler overhaul

Hello everyone, Well this is my latest project that I have been working on. It was a nice Anniversary ten-wheeler I recently acquired that needed a face lift. With many parts swapped out, I also cut down the smokebox, will strip the white on the wheels, and add a nice new wood cab. So far these are the parts that have been swapped; Flag holders on pilot Working coupler Number plate on smokebox Headlamp Stack (which thankfully fit very nicely in place of the original) A new bell kit (to be assembled still) Whistle Safety valves A sky valve will be added on the top of the dome as well An additional air pump I got a set of butterfly doors, not sure if I will use them or not And of course the cab to come The loco will get a fresh bath of paint, the running gear will be repainted as well, and a light coat of weathering will go over that. Now for the imho odd part of the build. I have decided that the tender will be rebuilt into a “whaleback” tender. I am modeling this somewhat in between the SPNG and Oahu RR. Most of my locos are pretty prototypical and I wanted something new, something created just by me. So here it is, in basically stage one. What do you think???

PS please don’t let the paint on my table distract you ha ha ha. I just finished weathering the two skeleton log cars on the ledge in the background. The ledge is my future extension yard for my Hon3 layout. It will be lightly scenic’ed with a masonite fascia. Thank you for looking! Matt

I think that’s going to be one sharp locomotive! I like the idea of a whaleback tender also. Pacific Coast Ry. also had a couple. I’ve thought about doing one for one of my Delton C-16’s. I know Dave Goodson has done such a tender for one or two of his ten-wheelers.

nice!

I think that to have a realistic foundation for forming an opinion I need to see stage five.

Thanks for the words fellas.

Ha ha ha, I’ll be sure to keep on postin’ that way we get to stage five! I’ll be waitin to hear the final thought

Matt

Nice project! The whale back tender will really set your loco apart. Someday I want to build a Vandy tender for mine.

A little dark but looks like a good start

Hi Matt,
Are you planning on shortening the back head and building a larger cab
as part of the rebuild?
Rick

Thanks, the photo was taken with my phone… not a great shot. I promise from this point on they will be with my camera.

A vandy would definitely be different too, this may be the first whaleback with a ten wheeler i’ve seen…

Rick, I am going to use one of the banta laser cut wood cabs, Not sure about the backhead yet, I want to wait to see how the cab fits once it comes.

Matt

Hey everyone here is an updated photo…[

" border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”>](http://photobucket.com)What’s left? Well within the next week I should have a cab, the entire loco painted and weathered, and a great deal of work done on the tender. More and more pics to come! Matt

Looks like you’re off and running. I’ll be watching the build. Hope for a bunch of detail shots along the way.

Alright, today has been very productive! Got the loco primed and it is just about ready to get a coat of paint! As seen in the p ictures… the smokebox front will be left silver. Just like SPNG the rest of the smokebox and stack will match the loco. Matt

Primer ties it all together quite nicely

Man, that brass headlight casting has gotta weigh at least a quarter pound in this scale.
Like the aftermarket air pump: as an editorial note, compared to published references in the model railroad press, the Annie’s air plumbing is a bit on the inaccurate side around the pump.

Yeah, it’s a nice loco and all, but what’s that in the background?

The background… well that’s my compromise with the wife right now in our smaller (beginner) house. It was either I take up a lot of our small yard with f-scale orrrr build Hon3 in the garage! So there it is… and I still have an outdoor layout at the folks and have a few layouts I often visit! Win-win for both of us!

Nice work Matt. Thanks for the pics

Thank you guys for the kind words!

Matt,

You are doing nice work, but was distracted by the whaleback mock up. Do you have a plan to build from? It seems to be a bit short in height.
If not I do and would be willing to send a copy to you. It is of the Nev. Cty. NG as used on enginf #9.

Barry - BBT

Hey Barry thanks! I do not have plans although I am basing the height of the tender in relation to the height of the boiler. SPNG 18 had a much taller tender than the 9 did. I am referencing SP 9 along with the Georgetown 12 which has an even lower tender shell. I do appreciate the offer for the plans though. If I was modeling an exact prototype I would definitely take you up on it. I’m just building what comes to mind ya know I mean. lol. It’s definitely a hybrid in my opinion. Also, I think once I get a walkway with railings it will seem to heighten it up some as well. And if in the end it’s too short- I’ll break it down and build it again  Matt

Here they come- Here are some shots of the “almost” finished product. I may go and do a dark gray for the smokebox and stack- have not decided yet. Once the cab is on I’ll be able to decide. Otherwise my awesomely HUGE headlight is operable and in place! Hope you enjoy! More pics to come! Matt PS I apologize for the cut lever being aimed straight up… darn shop crew…

Do the dark grey.
