Large Scale Central

Taking a stab at trestle installation

Picked up a four foot trestle at a flea market for thirty bucks, and had to find a home for it. So, It will be used to cross Lightning Gulch. The line then climbs a ten percent grade on curve heading to the town of El Patron and the Lucky Baldwin Mine.

Also took the opportunity to run my three snow plows around the line to check clearances…winter will be here in a few months. Of course one of the wedge plows lost an extension i had added to lower the blade a bit. The Russell plow cleared all the obstructions, however I will have to put signage along the line to remind crews to pull in the wings in a couple locations.

I do hope that’s a misprint on the grade

… or geared locos only …

ahh come on, whats a little challenge?

My Shay could handle it!

I found 4-5% on my indoor line to be about all the engines could handle, hope it works

Actually I do need to toss the stabila digital level on the grade and see what it actually is.

Today I started hauling in rocks to start forming Lightning Gulch. The concrete blocks and stumps are very temporary in nature. Probably need more rocks.

If you need more rocks we have plenty!

Bring em up here, ill put them to good use!

Okay I lied. 6.1% grade on the trestle. I have the large rocks just about where I want them, now I need the smaller granite rocks and some gold decomposed granite. I am thinking about code 250 for the guard rails based on advice from another modeler.

Did you figure out where the water barrels are going to go?

That’s going to look good!

Well it does a have little platforms for the fire barrels. I’m now considering a real short tunnel just to the right of the trestle/photo on the branchline.

Fire barrels at Michaels. made from wood.

Just make sure you build your tunnel tall enough the first time so you don’t have to rebuild it like I did. The Shay is happy!

yeah a big kawpow wouldn’t be much fun.

I was going slow but getting it back out of the tunnel was a challenge. It got stuck coming out!

Just an update, work progresses on the trestle and branchline to El Patron. I staged the BNSF GP40 on the mainline to give some perspective. Recent storms aided in loosening the soil for digging. I now have to line the gulch with rocks and debris.

In the second photo you can see rocks stored all over the place the will be placed just beyond the trestle where it begins a sharp 4 foot radius turn.
