Large Scale Central

Superliners in 1:29

OK nobody makes these things in that scale. Great Trains manufactured some but whats available that pops up occasionally for sale is what’s left of their produced undetailed 1:32 line. I had the opportunity to see a quite detailed 1:32 car made by Ralph Brown (American Standard Car Co.) however it was not quite what I’m after. So I had a bunch of scrap materials in my shop and I thought I would take a stab at making these cars in 1:29. I already had the dimensions but no real plans to work from. The length is 35" and the height is approx 6 5/8" I know the radial roof is gonna be a pig… Drew up my own plans based on what info I could find at the time.

BASE Materials will be 1/4 pvc board,1/8" pvc board, 1/8" acrylic and wood. I milled out the kerfs and rabbets for the acrylic sides to attach the base , ends and roof.

Made a first attempt roof but screwed up the rabbets on the wood so made an attempt to fix it with coro and then .040 pvc…fail. The clear 1/8" acrylic is sprayed black on the backside to represent tinting on the windows.

Second roof attempt that was a success and currently working off this mock up.

Nice looking build. Should go well with your three 40s pulling them.

I've done this on several buildings. Depending on the light conditions, sometimes they look mirrored, sometimes tinted. Looking forward to watching this build. Ralph

OMG… He’s showing them to the public…

Good luck, Son…

Quite a frikken project?
What or who’s trucks will you use?

That is going to look good for womans work. I still want to see you build that steam engine.

I'm planning on using a modified Aristo truck. I also plan on make the Superliner II's which make the truck build a bit easier (I think)

I keep looking at I want to eventually make Shawn but just ain't feelin' it yet.....the A.D.D. thing ya' know. Oh and that will be a passenger consist as well ...with 1 car ;)

Rooster,

Well you may be poultry but you’re no dumb cluck for sure. :o

Very clever and innovative construction on that roof! You do wood working proud not to mention the modeling aspect. A great start.

Are they done yet?..

Looks like they would make dandy bread boxes !

Thanks! I was rather pleased with the idea and the outcome so far. Now on another roof instead of 6 pieces I cut it down to 3rds. The idea behind the 6 pieces was for showing seams but as the plan progresses I don’t think there will be a need for that. (the bread boxes are the same in length it’s just the one car is pushed forward and the angle of the picture)

Oh…and like any smart Rooster you always mill extras as you go.

I mocked up the bottom piece (between the trucks)

I also got a start on the truck frames

Good start. You might consider thin metal for the roof pieces. I’ve used the metal foil duct tape, craft foil and used aluminum printing plates. You could use a ballpoint pen to score in the roof lines.

Whose truck frames did you start with?.. oops, you said Aristo above…

Greg

Interesting project! Boy, those are some long cars!

Well, let’s see: Superliner dimensions are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superliner_(railcar)
Specifications
Car length 85 ft 0 in (25.91 m)
Width 10 ft 2 in (3.10 m)
Height 16 ft 2 in (4.93 m)

If we’re talking 1:29 scale then (85ft * 12inches/foot) = 1020 inches
1020 inches /29 = 35 inches long.
And 6.6 inches tall.

I thought I covered that in the beginning Forrest.

Since were 2 pages deep on this thread I suppose I can show you where I’m at so far but I’m still learning, experimenting and trying to come up with solutions. Would also like to thank fellow LSC members Gary B and Joe S for coming through with MR mags that had the 1:87 Superliner drawings in them. Thanks Guys! Made the bottom center section removable but not the whole floor

Got one side semi mocked up and making decent progress.

Your having a little too much fun with this. Thats looking great so far.

Seems I remember 3 or 4 years ago you saying that there was no way you could build your own stuff as nice as some of the other master modelers on here. I think you underestimated your ability back then. Nice work!

Those Superliners are really looking Super. Great work, love that paint? job. what ya using ?
