Strates Carnival Train

It’s Carnival time again in Danbury CT. The midway is provided by James E. Strates shows of Orlando Florida. The last of the traveling carnivals to move by train. The Carnival Train consists of 9 heavyweight 6-axle coaches, a baggage car converted to a power car, 44 89Ft. TOFC flat cars and a 70 ft Ramp Car/Flat. The length of the train is just under 5000 feet including power. I chased from New Milford CT south to Danbury where much switching was done to the chagrin of weekend mall shoppers who had to wait at a grade crossing as the train was shoved across, cut, pulled, cut and shoved again to re-arrange the cars and split the train so only 20 some cars unload at one time via the ramp car at the end. The chase and switching consumed over 3 hours of my Saturday and resulted in over 500 pitcures taken with the new camera. Some of them even turned out OK. Here are just a few that I like… [url=lsc.cvsry.com/Strates08_03-1024.jpg]

Jon,

Some of those pictures aren’t half bad!

Very cool Jon. An opportunity to photo a circus train is indeed rare and becoming even more so.

I agree. Some of them are even half good!

Tough crowd, Jon. Thanks for sharing.

Steve,

the “not half bad” expression is apparently the ultimate compliment from one New Englander to the other. At least that’s what someone with lots of New Englander relatives told me.

Used to work with a guy. If he said, “Should suffice,” that was extreme surpurlative!

You could post some more of these

The tough part is choosing what to post. I’ll go through them again and try and pick a few more winners. Out of the 500 or so I took, I doubt that even half are good

What do you want to see - Engines, Coaches or Midway flats?

Midway flats and coaches.
Ralph

Nice pics. I didn’t know that any circus or carnival still traveled by train. Seems like it would be tough to find good locations for a carnival that have rail access.

Jon,

Thanks much for posting the photos. I didn’t know there were any carnival shows left that traveled by rail.

Got any photos showing unloading or loading the equipment?

Quite. Same for Old Englander.

Chris,

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I have to be careful when I mix the different English speakers’ idioms.

Wish I’d have know it was coming through. It probably passed right near here on it’s way up to CT. Nice pix Jon…keep’em comin…!!

HJ,

Pardon me for “pulling your chain.”

I often use “not half bad,” as a compliment, myself.

I was just making a cheerful play on words.

Steve

My “clarification” was in regards to Ric’s “tough crowd” comment. I certainly wouldn’t want to leave “the wrong impression”. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Americans haven’t spoken it for years …
