Strates Carnival Train

From the James Staits shows website

AMERICA’S ONLY RAILROAD CARNIVAL

Strates Shows, Inc. is the only railroad carnival still traveling in the United States today. The Orlando, Florida based carnival company uses a 61-car train to transport the show’s equipment and employees to various locations throughout their seven-month season. In one season alone the train will visit 16 different locations and cover more than 6,500 miles.

In the early 1930s, traveling by railroad was the trend of the carnival industry. It was at that time James E. Strates, founder of James E. Strates Shows, purchased his first ten railroad cars. As the company grew and prospered, so did the need for additional transportation. While other carnivals eventually converted solely to highway transportation, Strates Shows continued to purchase additional railroad cars. This gradual expansion resulted in the unique 61-car train which currently travels the East Coast.

The brightly colored train is over one mile long and consists of 50 flat cars, 10 sleeping cars and a generator car. Each flat car is 89 feet in length and, when loaded with equipment, weighs in excess of 100,000 pounds, one of the heaviest cars traveling the rails today. Sleeping cars, better known as coaches, are home to over 100 employees.

The logistics involved in moving Strates Shows’ employees and equipment has developed into a precise science. A designated trainmaster and crew can load or unload the colorful train in under 18 hours. This timely and reliable method of transportation, combined with years of experience, has made railroad travel the most cost-effective and efficient way for the carnival to travel. Not only is train travel an efficient mode of transportation, it is an exciting part of the nostalgia and history of Strates Shows.

Midway flats and coaches. Ralph

OK - Here’s most of the coaches and a few of the more interesting midway flats. The last flat is the ramp car. [url=lsc.cvsry.com/Strates08_10-1024.jpg]

Jon, Thanks much for posting the photos. I didn’t know there were any carnival shows left that traveled by rail. Got any photos showing unloading or loading the equipment?

I think States Shows is the only carnival. Ringling Brothers still has two trains - The Red and the Blue. I’ve never seen either. I don’t usually hang around to watch them unload. I only got one shot of them prepping the ramp car this year. In 2003 I got a couple of the unloading operation through the trees. [url=lsc.cvsry.com/Strates08_20-1024.jpg]

No worries HJ - Thanks . I think Ric’s was just funning you as well

Traveling I-95 back and forth to FL, I get to see a lot of carnivals that move by truck. The last time I saw one on a train was when I was a kid. Thanx for the pix, Jon.

HJ,
Just yankin your chain, no harm intended.

Jon,
Obviously, you’ve hit a cord that many people enjoy. I imagine it is a reflection back to when many of us remeber seeing “the Circus coming to town”. In today’s world, I imagine the logistics of this is quite extensive. With operations costs spiraling, we might see a return to this type of transportation puzzles.

One big one came to Ottawa, about 8 years ago. I remember it as quite the sight. They set up in the big complex out in Kanata, and walked their animules from an old CN line about 3 miles away.
If I remember correctly, it was Ringling Bros., Barnem And Baley.
In any case it wasn’t that long ago.

Jon,
I think you created many a smile with the circus train pictures.
Ralph

I forgot that I had posted video of this train from last year in the Videos Beta section…

The carnival left town on Monday 7/7. Since it was a work day I was lucky to be able to be trackside as they rolled past the old Danbury Union Station. The pictures are still in my camera - I haven’t had a chance to download and check them out. Before the train made it to the interchange point with CSX at Pittsfield, MA one of the passenger cars derailed and was dragged on the ground for quite a distance. Fortunately no one was injured and only one truck of one car went on the ground. It caused quite a delay getting the car re-railed and removed from the consist so the balance of the train could continue. FRA rules say the wheels on that car need to be replaced, so it will be down for a while. John Bazan, One of the members of the Housatonic RR Yahoo group, got this telephoto shot of HRRC 3600 tied on to the tail end of the train ready to start a re-railing attempt. The last car in the photo is the one derailed.
