Station repairs

It’s been a while getting the shop cleared out for room to work on this, but I decided that it was time to start this project. I needed to strip the roof of the tar paper shingling that fell apart almost as soon as I put the station outside.

With the old out of the way it was time to assess the damage done. I found that the edge spacers I had applied had come loose as had a good portion of the wood trim. The main roof structure is in decent shape as I used aluminum coil stock for it’s base. So other than tightening that up here and there, I re-cut some larger spacers for the entire edge line.

Next was to cut new trim pieces from heavy plastic and get those painted while I worked on securing the main roof sections

Once painted and with the main roof tightened up I installed the fascia pieces with 3M glue and clamps

Once the edge was finished I was able to turn the roof right side up and start on the smaller dormer and end fascia pieces

I’m getting to this as life permits so I should be a bit getting done. I plan on using large sections of roll roofing on it this time, because I don’t want to cut all the tabs I needed on the original build

It will only take a few thousand cedar shakes to cover that roof! Just sayin’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Is it done yet???

Dave,

What about doing a faux slate roof using plastic (acrylic, abs, whatever), and giving it the "Ray Dunakin’ treatment? Ray seems to have good luck using styrene outside and it will be fairly quick to do.

My tuppence worth.

REAL slate resides on the LSML&E …That thing is screamin real cut and NAILED slate shingles ! Cedar is for sissy’s …(not = note the proper use of the apostrophe and that I spelled it correctly SHAWN)

Real slate? He’d need a fork lift to move it…

Personally, I would try one of the Precision Products veneer sheets. They have several different varieties of roof types; slate, cedar, shingle, tile, corrugated metal…

Whatever Hollywood uses, I’m sure it will look good when he’s done
Just make sure it’s done by the time ECLSTS rolls around. I’d like some pictures without the shingles sliding off

Bob that has been considered. But after tabbing10,000 plus shingles on the original build, I’m in no rush to do a repeat. It would take the best part of a 4’x8’ sheet of plastic to do the roofs.

Steve, you’re right on the few thousand count, and I’m not splitting slate for shingles.Period!

Ken i think the last estimate for PP roofing was 12 pieces.

Ralph, I’ll get it done for you.

Why Not?

I finally got time to re-cover the roof. It’s been a bit slow going but I got the first section cut and fit. Since it had the most detail to work around I decided to do Ralph’s side first.

just roll roofing with a mineral surface glued on with lap cement. The missing dormer was loose, so I’ll re-secure it when the lap cement seals

That’s still going to look good and hopefully weather a bit better than the last attempt.

That oughta work…

That’s looking better Hollywood. What ^^they said.

Nice fix…

Track side roof in place.

It needs a few more eyebrow windows while your at it!

I do like those windows…Sure is a lot of great modeling going on around here lately!

Looking good Hollywood.
