Star Trek 1:350 Enterprise Build

Hi Mark and other Trekkies:

Has anyone visited the Smithsonian to view the model built for the original TV Series? Apparently that star ship prop was narrowly saved from ending in the dumpster!

Mark, is there a web link describing the large 1701 kit?
I am not going to build one but I really am interested in seeing what the finished product looks like.

Norman

I saw the “original” last spring.

Here is a video of the first “prototype” at a Sci-Fi convention, a little rough but really shows off the features!

If anyone wants to follow my build you can do so here… http://www.allscaletrek.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=457

It's worse than that, it's physics, Jim!

Delightfully mad!

Saw an NX01 kit once. Didn’t have any money to spend at the time. (Still don’t)

We come in peace, shoot to kill...

I wouldnt mind myself if ya posted pics along the way even tho its a railroad forum…as long as the web page owner wouldn’t care. I remember Star Trek as a Kid pretty cool stuff for its time… Travis

This category is called ““Other Hobbiess”” and, if you look at all the topic entrys, ain’t that much in here that’s railroad… Nothing wrong with posting pictures of the build… besides, who says that some of the build techniques wouldn’t apply to building a model railroad??

One of the very best of all Star Trek micky-takes, and a cult movie in its own right, is the rightly-veneered ‘Galaxy Quest’ - watch it and laff.

So, you nerdier than me types, that clear dome that is top dead center on the disc, is that the Pilot House, mistakenly named by landlubbers - The Bridge(to be correct, the Pilot House is part of the Bridge, which also includes the Bridge Wings, where the lookouts stand, the Quartermaster’s Station from which the Ship is navigated, and the Signal Bridge, from which ship to ship communication [non-electronic] is done. They should never have landlubbers write screen plays about nautical topics. Its like fingernails on a blackboard to me.). USS Vincennes (CG-49) even had a Pipe Bridge, where the Skipper played his Bag Pipes during the second Dog Watch.

Now that I’ve led you far astray, and told you waaaayyy more than you ever wanted to know about Pilot Houses and Bridges, and such, I’ll ask again, is that clear dome the Pilot House, or is it NCC-1701’s NAV Bridge, or their rendition of 10-Forward.

There is another dome at the bottom dead center of the disc. What purpose does it serve?

Questions, questions, questions?

You force me to let my nerd out...

The "Bridge is the upper “dome” structure on the ‘top’ of the saucer section; it controls the entire ship including command, navigation, and fire control.

The lower “dome” is called the “Lower Sensor Array”.

Now here is where nerds and geeks will get into a full-blown “smack-down”…Should the upper dome be clear giving a direct view of the bridge, and giving the bridge crew a direct view of space…OR…Should it be “frosted” as the lower dome and as it appeared in the original series?

My answer to follow…

As a sidenote, some Star Trek trivial. James Doohan’s passionate hobby was large scale railroading. Had a pretty nice garden layout at his home in the hillsides of Arcadia, California ( just above Santa Anita Racetrack. I attended an all-scales train show at Pomona Fairlex in the early 90’s and was heading out the door. Right in front of me is this older gentleman trying to negotiate a very large cart of brand new LGB stuff. When I helped him with the door, he turned around to thank me. None other than “Scotty” James Doohan! We got into a conversation walking to the parking lot and talked about nothing but trains and his layout. Heck of a nice man!

For Steve…A close up of the “Bridge”. This is lit from underneath by LEDs. The second picture shows the nav-lights, red for starboard, green for port. They all flash with synchronization with two nav-strobes on the bottom of the "saucer, and two more on the “secondary” hull. The kit has an unusual “texture” highlighted by the macro-lens. The color was an “accident”. I did not care for the molded color; the kit recommended “Ghost Gray”. I used a light grey primer and liked the color so I chose to sand and over-coat the primer with a satin clear. .

The most striking feature of this kit will be the optional lighting kit (and I thought LS trains were expensive). The nacelles are fitter with small motors to spin the “fans”. Constant lit and “twinkling” LEDs are behind the fans to give the lighting effect. I had to send the LED boards back to the factory as they did not sequence properly, this has set me back considerably in the build. New parts are due next week. While they worked ir was impressive! Interestingly, the original TV model used Christmas lights to create this effect. Note the lighting kit mimics the shape of the old C7/C9 bulbs! . I “fogged” the nacelle caps with steel wool… .

. I painted the “fans” for effect, they where almost invisable without the dark lines…They spin within the fogged end-caps. .

Cool. Hope you can get a video of the lighting effects in action.

Pretty cool. Personally I’m more a fan of the Galaxy, Sovereign, Defiant and Akira classes.

If I ever get done modeling the stuff I really want, I have an idea for a couple liquid deuterium tank cars… starfleet fuel transfer tanks lol.

Anyone got dimensions on the nacelles? I kinda figured that one nacelle on a series of flatcars as a high-and-wide shipment would be pretty cool, but how big are we talking? What about a single warp field coil on a flat car?

All hail the Jupiter II Guy Williams lives danger danger will Robinson down with dr smith

Did this build ever get any farther? Question, were the “fans” on the original 1701 still classified as being the same as those on the galaxy & sovereign classes ie the Bussard Ram Scoops?

Oops! Forgot about this one!

It’s done, I am out of town on business but I’ll post finished shots when I get home. The “bussards” did move accross other classes in the fleet.

Now on the table is my 1:350 “refit” version from “The Wrath of Kahn”.

Nacelle lighting test…

The clear dome only occurs in one episode, the pilot. Which was reworked into The Menagerie. All other versions were in the first season a tall almost spherical dome the in season 2&3 its the more flatter dome.

Aboard the galaxy class, it was shown to be a “skylight” on the top of the bridge. In the D’s final sequence, the saucer’s crash landing on Viridian III, the dome has been shown to have been destroyed. Looks like glass, but standing Trek lore has all “glass” as being transparent aluminum.
